New York City on a Budget - HELP

a few cheap Meals
Pizza for 1.00 a slice (Two Brothers Pizza) - normal size- corner of 38 st and 8th ave-- it is just pizza not good not bad-- but better then a lot of places for 3.00 a slice-- if you do not know the pizza place in NY go here you will know what to expect and never feel bad for what you paid. No (little) seating
Chinese- a small place between 48 and 49 street on 7th ave (732 seventh ave) Pearls great take out style taste has a large place to eat with service under 10.00 a person with tax and tip.
Both places are VERY crowded 12:30-1:30 on weekdays

Also, If you are a D23 member, you can get 40% off tickets for Mary Poppins on Broadway.

Or if you have a Disney Visa just put in the 1st 3 numbers of your credit card # (it's a slightly better discount than the D23)

I highly recommend this show I just saw it last Friday night in NYC. I have seen Wicked and Lion King and this one is by far my favorite.

Ask the family you are staying with to check with their local library - ours has memberships to the Museum of Natural History and the U.S.S. Intrepid that any town resident can sign out and use! :thumbsup2

I bought our MP tickets in that big box thing in time square. They were 194ish for 3 tickets. We were in 4th (5th?) row in the mezzanine. They were supposed to be half off then they threw in tax and a small processing fee.

MP was cute, I regret spending the money on it though. I wanted to be wowed - this wasn't the type of show for that. It was a oh oh! I know that song! Watch them sing it really well...type of show. Kind of like Beauty and the Beast.

Wicked wowed us. Those tickets were 165ish bought 8 or 9 months in advance, the millisecond they were made available. We were about 8 rows from the top but could see everything. I did not see those for sale at the box thingy in time square.

second the MEt and Museum of nat. history- b/c you can pay what you want to get in(they won't tell you this, you tell them)
Greys papaya is awesome for good dogs and frozen papaya drinks-last time we went it was 3.00 for 2 dogs plus the drink(!)
Love the SF ferry- we rode, got off, kept walking back around when we arivved and right back on for a free round trip view of harbor
love walking central park on a nice day
don't discount the Met for your DD,there are some great exhibits in there, esp. the Egypt part

On our last trip in to the city (we live an hour outside by train) my soon-to-be 5 year olds LOVED the M&M store (it's free but the M&Ms are expensive)
Also, you didn't mention it but I'm guessing you will head to the new Disney Store in Times Square. It is small compared to Toys R Us but has a cute Princess area with the talking mirrors.

There are three locations for Alice's Tea Cup, which is a cute place to have lunch or tea (they're on the web). Again, not the cheapest eats.

I had wanted to take my DD there but when we went by after a show the wait was more than an hour.

Visiting 30 Rock is fun as you can see the shows being taped in the morning.
What is nice about going to Top of the Rock is you can reserve a time so you can go up without waiting (which you can't do at Empire State building). Tickets are $$ but the view is once in a lifetime (I like this view because you can see the Empire State Building and Central Park).

Speaking of the Disney Store in Times Square it's currently closed until Memorial Day weekend for remodeling so will be reopened with new decor when you go in June

Someone mentioned the Tenement museum.

We were in NYC in early April and went to the tenement museum, I highly recommend it! :thumbsup2
Like your Dad, I'm a huge history buff so that was really a highlight of my trip. Not really "budget" (I guess, depending on your definition of budget) but worth the $!

Which website do you go to for the discount tickets to Mary Poppins?

TIA....

AG is at 49th and 5th, if you walk 8 blocks you can go to tiffanys and browse. its free and both of you will like the sparkles. st patricks is on 5th and 50th, beautiful and its free to go in and take a look around. the rock is free to walk around, it has many specialty stores including a lego store. FAO is also a reasonable walk if you go up to tiffany's its just a few blocks past, then you could easily head over to the park. that might be a good place to meet your up when they are done with the MET. if she likes build a bear there is also a huge store on 5th in midtown.

little italy/chinatown offers lots of cheap good restaurants. its a nice walk too.

check out your local library to see if they have a nyc city walks book. mine has one and it allows you to wander a neighborhood as your own guided tour.

brooklyn also can be a nice place to eat and take a walk.

Forget the 1.00 slices at Rays and go to Little Italy:

http://www.littleitalynyc.com/

Definitely stop into Ferraras for pastries or gelati. If you're going to be in NYC you'll have the opportunity to eat some great Italian food.

The Little Italy/Chinatown area is very cool to walk around in and if any of your family is an artist there's a HUGE Pearl Paint right on Canal St in China Town.

Also, the Intrepid Museum on the West Side Highway (don't know how budget it is but it's extremely cool)

Where in WI are you coming from?

SONY WONDER is a free interactive space for kids (not far from AG store) in case AG gets overwhelming. Also, if you are a fan of Teppan Edo, there is a Benihana restaurant down the street which has reasonable prices at LUNCH.

Chinatown is really wonderful to wander around...as someone said, Wo Hop is great, and there is the Chinatown icecream factory on Bayard street which has unique flavors!:thumbsup2 Longan sorbet and Black sesame ice cream...you can sample before buying (Zen Butter is delish!)

BTW, there is a free boat to Ikea (brooklyn location) which you get by south st seaport. Return trip requires a reciept (good for your group) for some small purchase (cookies count) from ikea....Ikea also has an inexpensive cafeteria.

If you have a specific focus to what you want to do, PM me...I grew up, as well as taught in the city.

In addition to Wo Hop in Chinatown, I would also really recommend Hop Kee (right next door to it).

Definitely stop into Ferraras for pastries or gelati. If you're going to be in NYC you'll have the opportunity to eat some great Italian food.
If you have a good appetite go to Ferraras for dessert after Wo Hops for dinner in Chinatown. Personally I can't do that. The portions at wo Hops are so big I have no room for dessert so we make separate trips to the 2 places.

:cool1: I have loved reading all your budget ideas for New York but was wondering if you could help us out with something not so budget conscious.

We are looking at doing a limo tour on New York and are having trouble getting reviews on some of the company's and are wondering if anyone has used any of the limo company's that they could recommend:confused:

:flower3:Hope you don't mind OP but there has been so many great responses to your Question.
:goodvibes Thanks in advance
