So my father in law decided we should stay on property for New Year's Eve and Day but he doesn't want to make plans or buy tickets in advance due to him thinking it all can be done day of. My thoughts are we hang out at the pool and maybe go to Disney Springs since we booked the room as his birthday present. Anyone have any ideas you would do for a party member who doesn't want to plan on one of the busiest days of the year?

Well, (if he truly does not want to "plan") there really is no need to buy tickets in advance.
He will still be able to buy tickets a day or so in advance. (Day-of, if that's his desire.)

And, depending on other expectations, there will even be some FastPasses still available, day-of.
(Not very good ones, necessarily... but "some.")

Is this a trip for him the b-day present or are there others to be considered? Does he even have any interest in any park days?

The room is his b-day present not the trip. Originally it was just us going to bowl game in orlando for New Year's Day but he thinks we can just walk into MK on NYE as well on the trip

If you don’t want to go to the parks, they often have countdown parties set up at the resorts. The last few years at POFQ there was a DJ, dancing and character meets. Something like that might be a nice option.

At which resort are you booked? The best suggestion I can give is do not even think about driving to a park. Hopefully, you are at an Epcot or MK resort where you can walk. boat, or monorail to the park and back.

Just FYI - it might not be warm enough to hang out at the pool.
Dining will be a zoo and it will be difficult to get reservations at this point - unless you wanted to do quickservice which will still be a zoo (although quickservice at the resorts won't be as bad)

Well, if he truly just wants to walk into MK, it’s entirely possible if you guys are willing to spend the money on tickets for the atmosphere. MK will likely close to one day ticket holders in the late morning of NYE but should reopen later in the day. So check before you make the effort to go there to buy tix.

We are going to Epcot at about 7pm on NYE and plan on practically no rides. We just want to hit the dance parties and party all night. That said, we will also be going to AK in the morning for a few rides and shows and have our FPs for those.

We are also doing Mk on the 30th with little planning. We will spend the morning in DHS with FPs, take a long nap, then enter MK about 7/8pm (AFTER the early fireworks) to party with the DJs, maybe hit a couple of less popular attractions, and watch the midnight fireworks. After that we plan to hit rides hard until the end of EMH at 2am. I expect most things to be a walk on in the last hour.

Also, I heard refresh works really really well during the holiday season. Lots of ppl there At that time of year don’t know how to maximize FPs so power users have a definite advantage.

We are at Coronado Springs at the new tower. I upgraded us to club level so we might just hang out up there then

Is your FIL buying the tickets for everyone? I don't understand why you can't just buy them now. There are still quite a few FP out there even now. Waiting is all kinds of a bad idea.

One day ticket holders that aren't staying on site. Because OP is on site, they won't have any problems, even as 1 day ticket holders.

Gosh, that sounds like a great plan. Makes me wish I was going too.
Have a splendid time!

awww..thanks! We are excited! We actually like the energy of large crowds so are very excited about all the dance parties on Dec 30 and 31. We are going again for a 2 week trip in Aug 2020 so rides are not our priority. We are just focused on the whole NYE craziness (which we have never done before).
