Question for you West Viriginia residents--I renewed my license this year & opted for the "this is not a federal identification" one (which is stamped accross the top of it). Since it is a State issued ID will I be ok going thru security?

Anyone been thru security with it and have any problems? Thanks for the info.....

From TSA.gov

Adult passengers (18 and over) are required to show a U.S. federal or state-issued photo ID in order to be allowed to go through the checkpoint and onto their flight.

We understand passengers occasionally arrive at the airport without an ID, due to lost items or inadvertently leaving them at home. Not having an ID, does not necessarily mean a passenger won't be allowed to fly. If passengers are willing to provide additional information, we have other means of substantiating someone's identity, like using publicly available databases.

Passengers who are cleared through this process may be subject to additional screening. Passengers whose identity cannot be verified by TSA may not be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint or onto an airplane.

Acceptable IDs include:

U.S. passport
U.S. passport card
DHS "Trusted Traveler" cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
U.S. Military ID (active duty or retired military and their dependents, and DOD civilians)
Permanent Resident Card
Border Crossing Card
DHS-designated enhanced driver's license
Drivers Licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent)
Native American Tribal Photo ID
An airline or airport-issued ID (if issued under a TSA-approved security plan)
A foreign government-issued passport
Canadian provincial driver's license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) card
Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
Non-US/Canadian citizens are not required to carry their passports if they have documents issued by the U.S. government such as Permanent Resident Cards. Those who do not should be carrying their passports while visiting the U.S.
This standardization of the list of accepted documents better aligns TSA with other DHS components, including Customs and Border Protection, and REAL ID benchmarks.

WV here. Can't help, this is news to me. Why would they make this "other" type of ID. What purpose does it serve? Since "we" can just walk in and get a picture ID (not have to wait for one to be mailed like some states), I would suggest you look into getting a new one. Ours don't expire until 2015.

I vaguely remember hearing about this in the past. There is not a lot of good information on this. Here is my interpretation from looking around the web in response to your post.

This is a result of the REAL ID program. At some point they plan to stop accepting ID's that are non-compliant (like yours) This program has been plagued with delays and keeps getting pushed back. It's scheduled to go into effect in January but many states are not complying so if I had to make a guess I'd say they'll push back the implementation deadline again.

According to Wikipedia you won't have to show a REAL ID until later:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/REAL_ID_Act

People born on or after December 1, 1964, will have to obtain a REAL ID by December 1, 2014. Those born before December 1, 1964, will have until December 1, 2017 to obtain their REAL ID

Here appears to be the details:

http://www.uscis.gov/ilink/docView/FR/HTML/FR/0-0-0-1/0-0-0-145991/0-0-0-165820/0-0-0-176819.html

It doesn't say you can't travel but it says: Citizens in this category will likely encounter significant travel delays. (but again, I don't think it will be in effect for travel next year).

So long as you cooperate with the security screeners you should be able to get through even if you lost your ID but having more ID helps. I also found some old info on ID (may be out of date):

TSA Contact Center Frequently Asked Questions
Q. If I lose my ID during travel, what secondary forms of ID will be accepted?
A. Passengers who do not have a valid photo ID, such as State-issued driver’s license, should bring any ID or documents they have available to assist in verification of identity. Passengers need at least two alternate forms of identification, such as a social security card, birth certificate, marriage license, or credit card. The documents must bear the name of the passenger. Also, one of these documents must bear identification information containing one of the following: date of birth, gender, address, or photo. If TSA can confirm the passenger’s identity, they may enter the secured area, but they could be subject to additional screening.

If it were me I would just go ahead and sign up for the REAL ID Drivers License that will be good now and into the future for travel through airport checkpoints. When they finally get around to restricting access to checkpoints via REAL ID you'll be glad you have it.

Why? What purpose did it serve to choose this option? (and especially if you weren't sure it would be accepted flying and you planned to fly?) I guess I"m not getting why anyone would pick this option

Is it cheaper?

I would go by this (from TSA.gov)...

Drivers Licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent)

Your D/L is issued by the WV DMV, correct? If yes, I wouldn't worry about it. The TSA says you can use that. (If no...well, we won't go there. :rotfl2: )

Just go by the website, and you'll be fine.

I just examined the ID requirements, too, as my DM87 gave up her D/L, and renewed as a DMV Photo ID. That's also included in their list of accepted ID's.

All this was news to me until I arrived at the window at DMV in June. They asked me if I wanted a regular drivers license or a federal id drivers license. Regular I waould get that day and Federal I waould get a temporary one and the federal would arrive in the mail. No price differnece when renewing. I opted for regular and accross the top of it is says not for federal identification and if I would have gotten the Federal it would just have a yellow star in the upper right corner. It seems like they are doing a background check for the federals-but I'm guessing-why else would it have to come in the mail.

It is a state issued id--hoping not to have any problems going thru security. TSA's website states: state OR federal id's.

Eventually, if Real ID goes into full effect, your ID will not be valid for airline travel, you may still be able to fly, but your ID would be treated as if you didn't have an ID at all.
