OMG We can say ballerina, Ballerinas, and Ballet!!!! I have been wating for oh three years!!Yay!!!! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Wow! This thread's taken a change of tack since I was here last!

I thought they'd just put the word Brer in, so people could talk more about Splash Mountain, but I may be wrong. Glad the dictionary is always expanding though, that can't be a bad thing! :thumbsup2

I would like to say that not all people from the south speak like what is mentioned in this thread. I am in and was raised in the south and would never speak that way. I was brought up to repsect others. My parents were born and raised in the south as well. Also it is not a widespread thing in the south for people to speak poorly of people of color. Sure, there are people who choose to act this way but there are people all over the US that act this way. Please do not make it sound like it is only in the south.:goodvibes

Just like people born or from Germany were not all Nazi but if you Watch Disney Treasures on WWII paints germans with an awful brush.

If you are referring to my comment, I most certainly was not painting the south with a wide brush, just mentioning, as with any term, they can be more prevalent in certain areas, whether racist or not. Such as: Most people in the country would think nothing of calling an Irish person "Paddy" - but in and around the New York City area, it was, and still is, a derogatory term for an Irish person. It is where the term "Paddy wagon" comes from. Persons such as myself are highly offended by it since I have experienced racism towards Irish people first hand. Whereas people from Ireland or other parts of teh country wouldnt even bat an eye at the term, nor realize that it is offensive. For the term "tar baby" - I did not even know it was offensive until I read it in a list of slurs in high school, many years after seeing the movie. I might have even used it once or twice before that without knowing the connotations of it. Although phrases like those are falling out of use, racism always rears its ugly head, most recently, with respect to Mexican immigrants. Even politicians have used the term "wetback" without realizing they were slurring Mexican immigrants.

Not that there is anything wrong with the topic, but it is offtopic. Although I am often guilty of that myself, its also a controversial topic. So lets bring this back. Feel free to discuss this topic in the VMKCB if you wish as long as its done with respect.

WOW! this thread really took a turn.

I had something typed up for here but this is not really the place for it, so if anyone might want to read it send me a pm and I will share.

The South is full of some of the most wonderful and gracious people you will ever have the opportunity to meet. I feel blessed I had the opportunity to grow up here and I'm tired of the way most Southern folks are portrayed.

I posted the instructions here two and a half years ago. :) But for those of you who don't feel like digging up that link, here it is:

New words are generally added at the bottom of the list. The capital letters after each word are codes to tell VMK what variations of the base word are allowed.

Thank You ElectricLime!

I'm not all that great at digging things out of files in a computer. Plus I always wanted to know how people knew there were new words. I was always puzzled as to how they knew and were posting. Thought it was an "inside thing".

Now another Question. I can save that as a Favorite??? Or will it not update with new words while in my Favorites??
TiA,

You're very welcome!

Yes, you can bookmark that page, and it'll always give you the current version of the dictionary.

Only if they'd release it to DVD!

I'm not holding my breath for that one.

Very possible!

Exactly. But it should still be released as it's a historical document. If people would ever learn to put things in the context of timeframe.:sad2:

I have seen it. And I would pretty much agree with doc's assessment. personally, I wasn't offended by the film. But then again, I understand the time period it was made in and the time period it takes place. I can look beyond that and see an enjoyable and award winning film.

Part of the problem is that it depicts the black people as being happy-go-lucky.

Even James Baskett (Uncle Remus) was extremely proud to have done this movie and loved Walt. He was also one of Walt's favorite actors. Which many people overlook just so they can say that Walt was racist.

Another part of the problem is that it's still debated about exactly when it takes place. Either before the Civil War or afterwards.
It has been clearly stated that it takes place during Reconstruction.
During Reconstruction, there were public schools opened to teach former slaves to read and write. There were even laws made to to provide equal rights to former slaves, including the right to vote. There also were even some former slaves elected to various offices.
This was a time where many former slaves were very happy and would fit with the film.

Yikes guess i opened a can of worms
