I have been reading your posts for a few days and I have enjoyed hearing all of your stories. I still have one question. But first I will let you know a little bit about myself…

I am married and I have two children (age 1 and 3). I grew up in CA and we always had annual passes. I enjoyed going to Disneyland and I wanted to do the same for my children. My husband is in the military so we are never in the same place for more than 3 years. We are currently in North Carolina and have just made our first WDW trip. We stayed in the All-Star Movies resort… sorry but we felt the resort was pathetic. We were there for 8 days and by day 2 we were regretting not upgrading to a better resort. On day 6 we went to the boardwalk and fell in love with the surroundings. We then inquired about the Vacation Club and we agreed to the terms. We knew about the military resort but it would still be a better deal with the DVC. Now here is my question…

Should I buy 150 or 200 points? I know that we would use 200 points a year but 150 points really matches our budget. We never inquired about 200 points so we do not know if DVC gives a better deal for purchasing more points upfront. Does anyone know? (My DVC guide is not available until tomorrow but I am anxious to find out.)

No they don't give you a better deal. If you can afford 150, I would say do that. You never know, in the future if your situation changes or you find that you really love it (which you will), you will be able to add-on. The SSR will be for sale for quite a while because it is so big.

You can always add on later either directly or resale. I'd vote for 150 if that fits your budget though if you can afford it, I don't think you'll be unhappy to go with the higher points.

I just want to add that even though the minimum first-time purchase is 150 points, once you are a member you can get add-ons as low as 25 points.

Get the 150 now--particularly if you're looking at the discounted SSR points being offered--and then look at an add-on if you are contstantaly running out of points or if a new resort holds some appeal.

If you love the Boardwalk area, you should probably look for a resale. Click on the link at the top of the page. You may save a little money up front.

The Boardwalk contracts end sooner than the SSR contracts (SSR is the only DVC resort that goes out 50 years), but for us a BWV contract works just fine - we will be near 80 when it expires!

you didn't say what DVC resort you are looking for. You will hear this a lot before you buy " BUY where you want to stay the most" that gives you the 11 months window. We own 250 at BWV and love it there. We started with 150 and then did an add-on 100 pts. BWV has standard rooms for less pts so you do need 11 months to book these or waitlist for them.

You should be fine with starting with 150 pts.

Did you look at SSR? For a young family that would be a good deal to get the extra 12 years, and right now the incentives are good to buy there. If you are thinking you want to spend most of your stays on the Boardwalk, then I would reccomend you get a resale there. It will be about the same price per point, but you will be where you want to stay and will be able to make ressies at the 11 month booking window. If you know you can afford 150 points now, you can do that and add on later, but points will always continue to increase in price. Our only regret was that we did not purchase when we first heard about DVC and that we didn't buy enough points the first time around. 150 points would probably work all right for you right now, but as your children grow, you will want more space. Don't limit yourself to a studio when a 1 bedroom is what you need. If you only plan on going everyother year, 150 will work, but if you want to go every year (like most of us), you will want to get the 200 to start with. The number of points needed for a stay varies by resort, so you need to look at your expected travel plans and help that decide how many points to buy. I would also reccomend you visit ALL the DVC resorts. That way you will know what to expect and where the accommodations most appeal to you. Another thing to consider is that with only 150 points, it will be nearly impossible to do any trading. You would need to bank or borrow in order to have enough points to do a trade.

Remember, the more points you have the more you'll have to pay in dues each year.

I would look into RESALE and check with a local bank for their FINANCING deals. You may be able to save enough money that way to get a few extra points without busting your budget.
