New Washer/Dryer

We ended up going with Whirlpool. I'd love a Cabrio, but it was out of our budget. After dumping our Frigidaire front loader after only 7 years, we will not buy another one. The dryer never worked properly, and the capacity is way to small.

Fischer and Paycal has a VERY high breakdown rate, and overall front loaders break down twice as much as top loaders. Computers are expensive to replace so we stuck with knobs.

Lovin the new Whirlpool duet so far (4 loads)!! Worth the money.the amount of water used is incredible.
Now one of my New Year's resolutions is to get a handle on the laundry situation! Anyone have suggestions on a weekly routine that works for them? I work outside my home and have 2 kids (10 and 13) so lots of activities! I try to do one load a day but usually end up behind and spend the weekend catching up. Any suggestions?

I have had the Whirlpool Duet set with pedestals for almost 3 years now and still love them as much as I did when they were new! I can do huge loads of laundry and my dryer is always done at the same time as the washer- this was a HUGE problem previously. We have had to have the rubber seal around the washer repaired once, but we did purchase a warranty, so there was no cost to us. We think a zipper must have caught it and tore it. The repairman did give us some hints. You only need about a third of the detergent marked at the fill line of the cup (he detergent) because there is such little water used if you use more, it is not being dissolved. Using more won't hurt anything, but it cannot dissolve in the small amount of water. The same goes for fabric softeners. Also always check the rubber seal when unloading the washer- lots of socks end up there. As someone already mentioned, you will want to leave the door of the washer slightly open to dry after use to avoid a mildewy smell. Have fun shopping- I highly recommend the Duet!

I work three days a week and so I do have some time during my days off to do laundry- however it seems we are always running errands on those days. I have found that it works best for me to have one evening that I devote to laundry. You will find that you will get a lot more done more quickly with the Duet. I usually do the basic laundry (lights, darks, whites, towels) on Mondays and then throw in a load or two throughout the week as needed. My kids are younger so we are only out one night a week for activities right now so this works for us. I also throw in a load in the morning before work and dry it when we get home if we will need something sooner.

We have the Cabrios by Whirlpool. I love how big they are. It has really cut down on the time it takes me to do laundry. We have a second floor laundry and were afraid to put a front loader up there. My neighbor's kitchen light shakes when her front loader is running. We are happy with our choice.

We will be in the market for new washer/dryer soon too and wondered if anyone else has their laundry on the second floor? We will when we get new machines and I dont know how that should impact our choice?

Do most of you use the pedestals with your front loaders? Are some quieter and more stable than others?

I have a Bosch dishwasher that is ultra quiet and wondered if that was something that was true for their washing machines as well.

Thanks so much for any input!

I have an old 1st generation Maytag Neptune - and while it has problems, they say they have fixed them in future models. It is on it's last legs (8.5 years old) and I'm looking ahead to when it quits working. I will absolutely get another front loader, but am leaning towards an LG or the Whirlpool Duet this time.

My Neptune Dryer is still going strong and so I'm just going to buy a washer.

Geesh, I could have written this post! Our Neptune lasted just about 8.5 years before we decided that we wouldn't put another $100 into another new board (the last one lasted 3 months). It too was the first generation and never gave us trouble until it was 8 years old. We ened up buying the Whirlpool Duet in February. Love them!

We have the pedestals, and store dryer sheets, swiffers, and garbage bags in them. The bottles of laundry soap don't come close to fitting. We usually use the medium spin option so it doesn't shake around so much. We did buy the extended warranty on the washer. The salesman said if we were buying a $300 washing maching it wouldn't be worth it, but since the Duet is just over $1000, he strongly recommended it.

crjack,

We were told by Best Buy that they wouldn't sell us a Duet or Duet Sport for the second floor. They said Samsung would be okay upstairs. We talked to everybody at every store and never feel like we got a straight answer. Some said pedestal, some said no, some said they are all fine as long as it is leveled...you get the picture. I am happy with the Cabrio- except when the dryer is finished. There is so much to fold!:laundy:

I'm not sure why you want front loading, but I wouldn't buy anything other than the Fisher & Paykel. It uses the least water and has the fastest spin so you use very little energy to dry to.

We just bought this washer and dryer today. It comes next week. I have heard and read too much about mold and oder from the front loaders. Plus....I am constantly adding stuff to my washer once it is going. How do you do that with a front loader?? :confused3

The Fisher & Paykel dryer we bought is also a top loader.

Thanks so much 1of6. When we are ready to buy I will have to make sure we research a model that is fairly stable and quiet. We never planned on having a second floor laundry......right now it's in my basement. Our house is not that big, especially upstairs, but during a remodel last year we opened it up and got rid of old crawl space storage and the plumber put in everything necessary for a washer/dryer upstairs.

My existing set is 15 years old and we honestly were afraid to move it up two sets of stairs and disconnect everything. Plus it's not the quietest set so we figured when they go that's when we'll replace them and put it upstairs.

It's funny, we've never even had the washer serviced and the dryer only once for something minor. I do a fair amount of laundry but they have held up well. We replaced a "gold" stove during our kitchen remodel that had to be 30 years old and it was still working fine......I don't know if the new appliances I have will last nearly that long!

Thanks again for the info.

You're welcome! I wouldn't move your old set either. Our old set was 12 years old but in our 4th house. Our dryer was not getting things dry so we just figured that it was time. This set is so much quieter than our old set.

Don't forget to check out epinions. You will need moldel numbers to check on the specific machines but you might find some info there.

We just got the Whirlpool Cabrio set and I absolutely love them. The washer is not front loading, which initially I thought I wanted, but after looking at them decided I didn't. It's awkward to bend down to load and unload a front loader, and I couldn't see paying the money for the pedestals.
