I need a new phone. We are Verizon customers and plan to stay with them. I am very curious about what people think of the new Verizon Droid phones. Any information positive/negative is appreciated.

I looked into the Droid, Verizon has the most expensive phone and plan, and their ETF is going up to $350. I am going with Sprint, the phone and the plan are way less than Verizon. Sprint is an almost $1000 less than Verizon for the cost of the plan & phone over the 2yr contract. Sprint has 2 phones, the Samsung Moment & the HTC Hero. I am trying to decide which one to get.

We are kind of stuck with verizon due to the terrain where I live (mountains). But after reviewing plan after plan, we have decided to go with a pre-pay (Straight Talk). I did see some good reviews on the droid though...google away ;)

I can upgrade my phone at the end of the month (staying with Verizon). We went into the Verizon store over the weekend since a friend of DH is a manager there - I wanted to look at the phones to see which one I want when I upgrade.

DH's friend said for me, the Eris would be better - the only thing it is lacking is a physical keyboard, it is all touchscreen. He said since I never had a keyboard to start with, there wouldn't be an adjustment period for me, I would just learn how to use the touchscreen. I just wanted a smartphone for basic texting/emailing/facebook. I think I am going with the Eris, but, he also said that a new Blackberry is coming out in a few weeks that will be competition for both the Droid and Eris.

Hold out a little longer. The new G2 android phone is supposed to come out the second week of Dec and i have heard it is a wonderful phone (big screen, 5mp camera and so on). They will be available from Sprint and V.

Sprint may have cheaper plans, but there service in most of the country is horrible. Anyone I know who has Sprint can't get a signal at all in my house, and those that have AT&T can get a signal only if they are near a window. I have Verizon and never have problems with dropped calls. Sprint is a great deal if you are in one of the few areas where they have really good service, but I would rather pay more and know my phone is going to work when I need it.

A co-worker has the same issue. Went with Sprint a couple of years back for the price and choice of phones. He regrets it ever since (dropped calls, poor service, poor customer service with his billing issues, etc) but he won't drop Sprint because "they have the coolest phones" and he's a gadget guy.

I have Sprint and don't have any service problems and I live in a major city. I have also traveled and used my phone with no problems. I can use the phone just fine inside too. I also have an aircard thru them and use it in my basement and it works too. I would recommend checking the guarantee of service the carriers offer, if you are not satisified you can return your phone with in 30 days.

DH and I switched our phones (service providers) from ATT to Verizon to get the Droid and Eris as the iphone (and ATT) in general has terrible service in the DC area. We had great service back in Wa and Mi but could never get through in Md. Guess too many people had the iphone here. So we switched.

So far we're both liking the phones. I find the Eris to be about the same size as the iphone and about as easy to use. The lack of a keyboard bugged me at first, or so I thought, but it realy doesn't. Prior to the iphone I did have a Blackberry and like this one sooo much better! Obviously I'm still learning how to use it, but so far so good.

One thing that I personally didn't care for about the Droid was that it is bigger and heavier than the iphone. Just a thought.

If your dead set on staying with Verizon and wanting a smart phone then Droid is your best one atm. Rumor is that they will release a new Dragon processor phone soon but idk if there is truth to it yet. You may want to wait till after Black Friday to see if anything gets released or announced imo.

I'd look at the Droid Eris by ETC. It is same type of phone and is getting much better ratings than the DROID.

Hope this helps and Good Luck!

Made by HTC...Pretty nice phone and sense UI is pretty but Droid is probably overall a better made phone.

I think Eris would be better then the Storm 2(New Blackberry)for what you need it for. Idk if you came from an iphone but for an adjustment if you did come from iphone its hands down the best virtual kb so there may be a slight adjustment. Although there are a few kbs on the market and Hero(or Eris as Verizon calls it)probably is second best around.

WoW...I read about Android daily and have not heard this. If G2 comes out I would think it would go straight to T-Mobile and have not heard of Sprint getting another before atleast next year.

Never had a problem with Sprint. They are def a budget carrier and are a lot cheaper then the competition. They are not perfect here but I rarely have any dropped calls etc....

As a gadget person I am surprised he is not with a GSM carrier. Sprint hardly has the coolest phones imo lol.

As a side note....Idk which phones you all are coming from that are currently on Verizon but keep in mind their smart phones require a data plan and its about $30 extra depending on which plan you currently are on. The Droid on a single plan is roughly $69.99 for a basic 450 min plan with 0 texting. That is the reason I stick with Sprint atm....$59.99 with 500 mins, text, gps.

Not to mention Verizon nickles and dimes...They charge you for the visual voicemail that you will have access to on both the phones which is a free feature from Sprint. I guess being a budget person that kinda stuff just gets to me and now they are charging $350 to cancel your contract with them. Almost 0 chance I would ever go to Verizon...Sprint roams on their towers so if I have any problems I got that but atm I think Verizon is last company I would ever go to.

While the most important item is to have good coverage where you need it, if you have multiple phones on a family plan, Sprint allows all of the smart phones to share a single family plan with data. AT&T and Verizon both charge per smartphone that needs data. The extra money each month has a much larger impact on cost than initial cost of the phone. We switched from a voice only plan on Verizon to 3 HTC Hero phones on Sprint and have been happy for the last couple of months. Regardless of carrier, make sure you get any discount you are entitled to based on employer, membership, etc.

Glad your happy...Currently have the Pre and wanting to get an Android phone but idk if they are there yet. I may wait for the next thing because its rumored there are some coming out Q1 of 2010.

Also in relation to the discounts...I am not eligible for any but anyone can sign up for the Sprint EPRP plan. Idk if that is stated anywhere in the forum or not but its a nice discount if you have none available to you.

I got the Droid (the one with the keyboard, not the stripped down Eris) on Friday morning. I really like it. I had a Blackberry Storm previously, and this is a gazillion times better.

i also got a Droid on Friday. I update my phone every year with Verizon and this is by far the best phone I've ever had. So easy to use and super fast and waaay smart as far as syncing with facebook and such. I didn't like the idea of the physical key board but it actually makes texting way easier. The screen is also amazing! and the google maps feature is incredible! so far its really awesome.

My daughter got a Droid last Friday and loves it. She is having a ball with the apps and some of them are pretty funny - for instance, the "flashlight" app just turns the screen on and it doesn't go off until you turn it off. What can I say, we're easily amused. She is very, very pleased with her purchase so far.

Not to mention Verizon nickles and dimes...They charge you for the visual voicemail that you will have access to on both the phones which is a free feature from Sprint.

There are a couple of free apps that let you use Visual Voicemail. You can use Google Voice for VVM as well.

I would love to get a Droid if I could tether it to my laptop like I do with my current Verizon Windows Mobile Smartphone. Also, I have used Sprint and T-Mobile and AT&T. Verizon's coverage beats them all, especially in the middle of BF nowhere... where I am occasional forced to go... ;)

The comments about Sprint not having good service is news to me. I have Sprint, and when I went to the Grand Canyon a couple of years ago, I was the only person who could get service at the Grand Canyon ;) Too bad it was DD complaining that she didn't like the babysitter :rotfl: Anyways, we get good service from Sprint and haven't had any major problems. We're looking at getting new phones, too, so I'll be interested to see how things here pan out. The new G2 Android sounds kind of cool...we'll see!
