New Vaccum question?

Well my good old hoover canister has finally died.....I need to buy a new vaccuum...what's your favorite & why? Not sure I want to spend much more then $300 on one.....but might consider it...2 kids, 2 BIG Irish setters, and a messy dh! So what should I buy?

I bit the bullet & bought a Dyson - the Animal model, I have 2 dogs, 2 kids & currently reside inthe House o' hair/ House o' mess...take your pick.

It was $550, I got it at Bed bAth BEyond w/ 20% off coupon.

It was obviously pricey for an upright, but sucks the living daylights out of the rug! It really sucks!

ONly negative (besides price) is a blood curtling noise it makes when on a rug (like the edge of an oriental or something) - literally sends my dogs yelping out of the range of noise!

I'd have to go with the Dyson too...I got the DC15 ball Dyson and love it! I got it at Linens n Things ~ it was $500 then I used a 20% off coupon that brought it down to $400 (plus tax)...it was the best price I could find for that model.

Consumer reports rated the Hoover Windtunnel as the top model. I think a Eurica came in as best value and the Dysons were down the list. I remember they didn't like the ball model and I recall one of their comments about Dysons otherwise -- it was something along the lines of: "Dyson advertises that they don't loose suction as they fill up. That is true, but they don't have much suction to start with."

I hate to say it but I kinda miss my hoover windtunnel even though we were having to get another one every year because they broke.
We got the purple dyson, I like seeing how much stuff comes out of the carpet but ive used for 7 months and still cant figure out how to use the cleaning tools.
Why must it make such a terrible noise if you bump into anything???I hate that.
We would have bought another windtunnel but they say they use teflon and with a parrot I wanted to avoid that.

I can't imagine how they can say it doesn't have suction. I love the power my Dyson has....I just told my DH that I can't imagine that I would ever say it, but I LOVE this vacuum cleaner.

I also love the handle suction hose. Makes it easy to clean cobwebs, stairs, and up along baseboards.

I didn't think I would ever spend that kind of money on a vacuum, but I am not disappointed!

Tell me about it, I got TAGGED on a vacuum post.

I have a Kenmore and I bought it mainly for the attachments. It has a stair cleaning attachment with a little mouse shaped head that has a beater bar. The vacuum works well but I don't have a lot of carpet, mostly area rugs. Vacuums don't seem to last like they used to, but then nothing does.

I think this is the area that CS totally lost me several years ago. To the point I don't even bother with them anymore.

I've had a Hoover Wind Tunnel and I have a Dyson. My Dyson is my main vac that I use almost daily to get the cat hair off the floor in our front room (two long haired cats here) in addition to vacuuming the furniture every week. I use the Hoover upstairs every several days. Every single time I use that Hoover, I get reminded on why I hate it and why we got the Dyson.

Sorry but Hoovers do NOT have near the suction that a Dyson has. A test that someone did at a store for us between the Dyson and the Hoover (same price range and we were going to get a new one no matter what) was we took the attachments from each vacuum and put it on the other. You could hear both attachments on the Dyson just whirring away at an amazingly high speed. The Hoover... well it sure didn't suck near as much.

I think CS is full of it when it comes to reviews since I have NO CLUE how they could claim that Dyson's don't work as well. I admit after the Dyson, I will *never* buy a Hoover again. I just use our old one for our bedroom upstairs so I don't have to take vacuums up and down (I'm a klutz, so I hate lugging things like that). Once that old one dies, I will just pitch it and say good riddance to our Hoover POS.

A few years ago I trashed my Kirby and bought a Kenmore canister for $300. I love it! We have 2 dogs, 2 cats, and four people in the house, and my vac has more than adequate suction for all the dirt, hair, crumbs, whatever, that we create. The flick of a switch takes me from carpet to wood, there's a smaller power attachment for the stairs. Love this vacuum!

I totally agree with you, helenabear.

I had a Hoover windtunnel and I could only vacuum my living room before having to stop because it lost suction. One day about two months ago I vacuummed my whole downstairs and all the starting and stopping and dumping took me almost an hour and a half! The next morning I went first thing and bought an Animal at Linens-n-Things and came home with it. I, too, was very skeptical, so I wanted to see just how much it would suck up. So I got my Wind tunnel out again and vacuumed...it didn't get much up.
I took the Dyson out and vacuumed...
Oh, the difference!!!! It got so much crud out of my carpets, I'm suprised we weren't all ill!

I will never own anything else. It was totally worth the extra money...
Oh, and now, instead of spending hours vacuuming, I do it in 15 minutes and DIS the rest of the time!

I have a Hoover Windtunnel Bagless and love it!!! I know some people prefer bags but not me. I would much rather empty the canister. I have never had a problem with the vacuum losing suction.

I love to read about people's Dyson's. When this one bites the dust I will probably check them out, and not because I'm not satisfied with my Hoover, just because of all the great reviews. With all the people that like them, they can't be all that bad.

I've been looking too, cause I want one for upstairs and one for down. I'm leaning towards an Oreck 8 pound upright, but havent decided yet which of theirs to get. I'm checking them out on qvc and directly from Oreck.

I just spoke with an Oreck salesman at a home show. When you speak with the Oreck guy, ask him what the difference is between the store's and QVC's vacuum is. There is a difference. The salesman told me what it was but I can't exactly remember. I think it is the power, but don't quote me on that.

We have the Oreck upright. Like the feature of being able to go from bare floor to carpet and also the lightweight. We have three hairy cats and one very hairy Siberian!!

I just got the Oreck XL and LOVE it! It is the 8lb. one and is so light and fits under my King Sleigh Bed...It cost a little more than I like to spend but I got a year supply of bags with it as well.

hmmm,....Now that I think about it...my grandmother had an Oreck and loved it! The price of the Dyson really scares me! I may look around & try them - I know at Sears you can try the display ones.

I don't want this to turn into a debate of any kind!!!! I'm just looking for some opinions & it's ok if they're different!

With the Oreck...there's no attachemnts though right? I need attachments for under all the furniture! or the doggie hair turns into live dust bunnies! I like the idea of baggless...but they always look so dirty to me it gross's me out.

I bought a Miele and it was the best thing I could have done! We had two of the Hoover wind tunnels and I also had to constantly stop and get the suction going again. Very frustrating. This new vacuum cleaner works like a charm and makes cleaning up so much easier. It was VERY pricey tho - close to $500, but I spent more than that on other less reliable vacuums.
