On the news this morning - Emergencies Act may be invoked. It's behind a paywall, but the key points are, if invoked:

- probable mandatory 2 weeks quarantine in hotel at your expense
- complete ban on international travel (incoming and outgoing)

I really hope they do go through with the 2 week quarantine at a hotel. To many cases of things not being followed. It was someone who travelled to the UK that was a source for the outbreak in the long term care home that has now caused people to die. Apparently that person was isolating in a home they shared with someone who works at the home? They may have tried to keep apart. But it didn’t work and now people have died.

Yup. Had that happen here too. While our province (NB) obviously has a far lower caseload than other provinces, we had a (relatively) big spike after Christmas because of people NOT following the rules - especially businesses. However, some were also individuals who just felt the rules don't apply to them, and yes, some of them directly caused their loved one's death (ignored quarantine rules and went to the nursing home, etc...).

I still think the PCR test prior to returning home is just a deterrent. Someone previously stated that there are flights coming into Canada with infected passengers. All of these new rules are to keep people, at least the mass majority, from vacation travel. No one with 2+ kids is going to want to fork out another $500+ for tests to come home. I know I wouldn't.

I took a cursory look for numbers before I called to see if my mom was well enough to talk for a few minutes. Sounds like my life might be a little more complicated right now than yours is. Consider yourself very fortunate.

I’m very sorry to hear about your mom, Gina. It must be very difficult. My sister and her husband live in the US but are Canadian citizens. They have been able to come and visit their ailing mother-in-law without any difficulties. They obviously had to quarantine first but they wanted to be able to see her before she passed. I hope you are able to make arrangements to see your mom.

I would like to say though that just because someone hasn’t posted what they are going through doesn’t mean their life may be less complicated than yours. None of us know what others are going through.

I have to say....for those that actually did vacation then came home and isolated, THEN collected the cerb to isolate...they definitely thought outside to box on how to vacation, and still get paid to isolate. I had assumed that, for that requirement, that loophole had been closed. I guess not I had always assumed that when I got home, I would have to quarantine at home with no pay or use my holiday so that I would still get a paycheck. Our conscience would not let us use that loophole to go on vacation. NO matter now much my mental health needs that break right about now.

I hate people who abuse systems set in place to actually help others when they need a hand up. Rant over...getting off my soap box now.

Maybe they’ll get caught and have to pay it back. It was clearly stated if you were on holiday you couldn’t apply when you returned. I don’t know how people could do that. But look at that couple from BC this week that thought rules didn’t apply to them and jumped the queue to fly up north to get vaccine. Now their mugs are plastered all over the news ha! Glad they got busted.

Didn't they say you could have 6 weeks between doses? I wonder if there is enough for that.

One dose does provide a good chunk of protection. It is just much more effective with two doses.

The new J&J vaccine apparently is between 70-80 per cent effective. Studies are being done on how much more effective a second dose will make it. I assume the mRNA vaccines are similar.

It probably IS going to be for nothing because the BC gov't has now said they won't be getting their second shot until their age group is eligble, which is (right now) August. However, they are to appear in court in the Yukon in May and if they are found guilty, they will be sentenced to 6 months in jail. So maybe even longer...which means the doses they just got were for absolutely NOTHING. Selfish, disgusting people.

I completely agree they are selfish narcissists. But if not a violent offence no jail time for first offenders esp if no related criminal record. Probably suspended sentence and fine. Yukon won't want them to do community service so unlikely to be a conditional sentence. A fine will mean nothing to them. But a suspended sentence still a criminal record. He's the CEO of a casino syndicate. That will be problematic for his career and will be the only real consequence save for the extremely bad PR and publicity.

I also agree that the uncertainty and worry - which is entirely of their own making - re when they can get the 2nd dose and whether the delay means it is significantly less effective - is likely the other real personal consequence of their awful behaviour. And that's completely on them.

Was the CEO. When the news broke, he stepped down. But definitely problematic for any future career prospects, and I in no way feel sorry for him or his wife.

Wow....I will have to goggle a little about that story. Why do people think they are above everyone else, and do not have to follow the rules set out for everyone. That is a pretty good judge of character if you can't follow the same rules as everyone else.
