I agree with you, there Magicbus, if you took 40% off the prices, that would be in line with what you might expect to pay for these offerings off property.

That just shows how ridiculous these prices are.

The Fort is full of campers and cabin-dwellers with full kitchens.

The only reason that I can think of that they would do this is the Dining Plan.

By charging exorbitant prices, they make the cost of the Dining Plan look reasonable.

But, this just shows how the Dining Plan is not a good deal. Maybe with the Dining Plan, you are paying just a little more than a fair price for the food. So how is that a deal?

And, who in their right mind would pay these prices?

So, at best, they will only be serving people on the Full Service Dining Plan.

How many FW guests are on the Full Service Dining Plan?

The kids prices were the CAUSE of our TE ban to begin with.

The first time we were charged $10.00 for a 3 year old was our last.

Of course the drink is probably actually more like $2.00 which puts the cost to $11.00.

$22.00 for 2 children. For food they won't eat even if it IS served on a Mickey plate.

Plus the $$$$$$ for the 2 adult porkchop plates. Plus tax. Plus gratuity.....

This subject is making my head spin....I may need a priest before its over with.

That kids menu is the most unbelievable, ridiculous thing I've seen at Disney in quite some time.

$8.59 for a kids meal is crazy even by Disney standards. I know TE is table service, but seriously, I bet if polled, 90% of TE's customers wouldn't give a rat's behind if they had to get their food from a counter...they want decent food at a decent price for those times when they are not at a theme park but don't feel like cooking. Period. I do enjoy some nice sit-down meals at Disney, but i enjoy them in the parks or one of the hotels. TRAILS END SHOULD BE A COUNTER SERVICE LOCATION! jmho of course.

And as KFK noted, that food is just not the kind of stuff most kids will eat. We try not to fill our kids up with garbage every day, and most of the time we provide home cooked meals that are somewhat balanced and somewhat healthy. But a grilled fish plate with whole grain pilaf for a 4 year old?? I mean seriously, I could go to the MK at Columbia Harbour House and get an adult portion of 8 chicken breast nuggets and fries for $7.69. 2 young kids could split that!

I bet the poor wait staff at TE rolled their eyes when they saw that menu. At least the long term staff. I doubt anyone asked them what direction to take the restaurant.

The "lunch" menu counts as a table service? That's terrible. You can't justify wasting a table service on a Trail's End lunch that's not even a buffet. FW really needs a food court.

This wins my prize for most intelligent post of the day so far.

RF is one of my family's favorites. But unfortunately, Disney probably does not want to eliminate a full service restaurant from the Fort. They can make a lot of money on that buffet. Of course, with the recent move toward spaces that double as CS for lunch and TS for dinner, like the new restaurant in Mexico at Epcot, I don't see why something like that wouldn't work in the TE space. CS for breakfast and lunch, with a conversion to the buffet or even a nice TS place for dinner with a menu similar to that new lunch menu. $16 entrees seem a bit more acceptable at dinner than they do for lunch.

Agreed!! The buffet setup at TE is almost already perfect for a CS like Roaring Forks.

We always check out lunch menus at places we want to try for this very reason. Take a look at the Fulton's menu sometimes. Insanely expensive for dinner, but downright "Disney reasonable" for lunch!

This seems to be especially true of DTD restaurants where sometimes it's the EXACT same entree for lunch - but at least a few $$ cheaper.

Maybe this is Disney's way of closing TE all together. Once the bottom line gets so low it can't go any lower, they will shut it down and feel it's justified to do so. DH and I will just eat at our camper...gotta love the crockpot!

You know, I would tend to agree with you that this new menu does look like somebody intentionally created it so no one would ever step foot in the restaurant for lunch.

But why would anybody intentionally do that?

I mean if they want to close the restaurant at lunch time, then why not just do that?

Why intentionally waste money, and put employees who are depending in tips in a position where they are going to fail and be frustrated?

So even though it looks like somebody intentionally made this menu undesirable, I can't believe that is what happened.

So that brings me to the conclusion that Disney, and Fort Wilderness in particular, is being managed by a bunch of idiots.

Will I think I am on my own when I say the Prices aren't that bad.( for Disney ) It's about what you would pay at liberty tree, Rain Forest, or even Hooters. Now that being said the kids prices are crazy . But it is still cheaper then the buffet. I wish they would get rid of the buffet all together. It's still a nice option over the buffet. But a cheaper counter service would still be nice.

Alternate possibility. I guess it's not a possibilty because I know it's happening. To what degree, I don't know. TE is a destination restaurant. Disney knows that most campers bring their own food. The number of campers that do go to TE is not enough to sustain it. They rely on outsiders. I've had people on my bus that are staying elsewhere, but are going to the Fort to do the outdoorsy things the Fort has to offer. It's almost like DTD. A lot of resort guests go there on their first or last day. It gives them something to do for a few hours either after arriving or before leaving for the AP. So while they're at the Fort for whatever reason, they need to eat. The bottom line is that TE is not catering to you and me for the most part.

I don't think they're even trying. We often hop the boat to go to Roaring Forks for CS. We'd eat a bunch more at the resort if there was CS at the Fort.

The food courts at other resorts are jam packed whenever we're there so presumably successful. Why not put at least a little effort in and make TE serve the people staying there AND people coming in for "The Fort Experience"

A million ways this could be done from just creative theming/menu to tailoring lunch even just for cabin people who may not have a car to grocery shop and who would rather not pay trading post prices AND have to cook.

Seems like a really big wasted opportunity to me.

As for the prices, agreed that the burger isn't all that far off from the one you'd get at WL (Bacon Cheese $8.59) but why put such big ticket items on then?

Heck for only $1.50 more than the $13.50 for Chicken and Waffles, I can get a Fried Seafood Combination at Fulton's for lunch. Heck for a mere $3.50 more I can get their trio with king crab, shrimp and scallops!

Which btw, I plan to do in a little less than 2 months.

I think this is related to the popularity of the dining plan and the frequency of the free dining offering. It provides additional Table Service capacity in the Magic Kingdom area. Changing over to Table Service is relatively low-cost and doesn't require any building refurbishment or construction that converting TE to a Counter Service might require.

Sadly it's not aimed, as several have pointed out, at those of us staying at the Fort (although cabin folks might qualify for free TS when the free DP is offered, right?) in the campgrounds. With so many nearby off-site choices close by that offer value, our own kitchens in our campers (and affordable groceries nearby), and the independant nature of campers in general, we are not the target market.

I hope they don't mess with the takeout menu at night.
