It is a little over 4lbs. I've only used it handheld so far, it is much easier to use than I thought it would be. The longest walk I've taken with it is a little less than 2 miles. I carried it by the tripod collar, there are finger grooves in it Of course a sherpa would be even better
I love watching birds and for the money this lens is well worth it.
Every time I see photos from that lens, I'm impressed by it. Dollar for dollar, it's hard to beat, that's for sure, and no need to be swapping on and off teleconverters like with my 300 f/4E!
Guess what I just got for Christmas?!!!!!! No more renting this sucker for me! Let the fun begin!!!! Zoo trip is planned in my head really, really soon Now, if I can actually get myself to go....that's another story.

I normally rent this lens during football season. It's going to be SO nice to not have to worry about it anymore! I'm so excited. I love this lens so much.
