New Tour Rules ? ? ?

Ok, this is Disney CM's we are talking about, not nazi's ;) You'll be allowed to take small items with you, fanny packs, water and the like - it's just cameras and big back packs/bags they have a problem with because when you are backstage it would be all too easy to slip something in to your bag as a 'souviner'.

As I said, someone had to leave their backpack behind on my tour, however when I asked if they wanted my camera (which was in a little pouch attached to my fanny pack) they were fine as it was zipped up and I guess they felt it would be pretty obvious if I were to take it out. I also carried a small bottle of water with me...the bottle of water that they gave me at the start of the tour. The issue isn't about traditional 'security' - they've always had these rules for as long as I can remember - it's about keeping the Disney magic a secret.

It's also my understanding that these rules about bags and camera's apply to ALL backstage tours at all parks, it's not exclusive to the MK.

I kind of agree with 3for Me. Imagine a backpack full of explosives placed in a Utilidor during the easiest way to gain access to them, a Magic Kingdom tour. The Utilidor is probably the most vulnerable location with the greatest number of people around at Walt Disnet World. I believe it is just another step in security to protect one of the most beloved location in the USA. And the terrorist type are not always foreigners (see Timothy McVeigh).

Leave the stuff with City Hall, I expect they would let you take survival essentials, i.e. water, feminine items, medicines, etc. in a small fanny pack (there would be legal problems if they didn't), and enjoy the tours. They are wonderful ways to see how Disney ticks as well as a treasure trove of minutae details and background you just don't get touring by yourself.

As webmasterpenny stated they don't generally take fanny packs and you are more than welcome to take water (in fact most times the tour provides it). Purses depend on the size, if you have a little purse no big deal, but if you carry a purse that rivals Mary Poppins you will be asked to leave it behind.

I am a guide for the Magic Behind the Steam Trains, we don't generally take anything for our guests and actually welcome pictures on our tour (in certain areas). But I also don't generally get guests that come with big bags anyway. I can't really say that I remember anyone arriving for my steam train tour with a bag ever...

Hmmmmm, and can someone kindly tell me how they would get this back pack of explosives past the security guards at the front gate? :)

Do you really think that there are more people in a concrete 'underground' utilidor in a back stage area than say Main Street during a parade?

I repeat, these are not 'New Tour Rules' - they've always been there.

It goes without saying that there are evil people in this world with violent motives. I have no doubt that with appropriate planning someone (or a conspiracy of persons) could sneak contraband into any secure area - just look at the stories of weapons that make it past security in airports.

The security risk with the Utilidor is greater in part because of MK's construction. MK is actually more like a second story, sitting on top of the Utilidor. The problem is that the parade is taking place on top of the Utilidor. An explosion in the Utilidor could cause a collapse of the streets and buildings above.
