Hiya Dis'ers

I've never been on this forum before. My hubby and I just recently bought a house and I'm trying to learn all the fun stuff about planting flowers and how to take care of the beds.

We have two flower beds in the front of the house near the sidewalk. The builder planted 4 shrubs in each bed and put pine straw down over the rest of the dirt. Well we just moved in mid-July and I have so many weeds growing in those beds.

What should I do to get rid of the weeds but not harm the shrubs and still be able to plant bulbs in the fall?

Thanks!

Oh boy....congratulations on the purchase of your house..a very exciting time...but, sounds like youa re going to have to get down on hands and knees and pull...yeah, doesnt sound like fun and it isnt.
But, it'll look really good when you get them pulled.

If you w ant to plant flowers..i suggest you drive around periodically and find stuff blooming in others yards that you like, then go to the garden shop and buy one or two or three.;) They usually have on hand what ever is in bloom at that time.

It may take a year so you can see everyhting in bloom but you will be rewarded for many years to come with lots of color.

Welcome, Kristy! :)

Congrats on the brand new house! :)

I've never heard of pine straw, what is it?

Kim :)

Hey amid chaos....thanks for the info. Looks like I'll be pulling out all those weeds next weekend :)

Hey Kim....pine straw is really pine needles that fall off of certain trees. I know we have them all over North Carolina and think it's possibly a southeast region for growing those trees. Hope that makes sense :)

Kristy welcome to the Dis F&G Board. Congrats on purchasing a home.

Yucky and dirty job weeding but Amid is right, there's only one way and thats pulling them out. To make the job a little easier moisten the soil well. The weeds will come out easier it the soil is moist. I would where gloves doing this nasty job.
