Poking my head inside the WISH door...

I'm 35. 5'9" and (sighing and gulping) 251 at my physical exam last week. Huge disappointment, let me tell you to hear that number. I'm sure everyone says this, but I don't think I look it. It's all in the belly area...limbs and back are pretty firm. Thankfully, I can say my weight is my only health issue. My bloodwork was clean and my blood pressure was 110/68.

Back story:
I had my kids back-to-back, 11 months apart. Just about every extra pound I have is probably from that. The kids are now 12 and 13. When they were little, it was harder to workout and we all know that the longer you have that weight, the harder it is to lose it. I know I also wasn't focused on losing the weight immediately as I should have been. Call it young and stupid, I guess.

A few years ago, I tried Curves for Women. Religiously worked out 5 times a week. After 6 weeks, I had gained 3 lbs. Completely depressing. I stuck with Curves about a year, but with little change.

I've been at the YMCA now for 15 months. I got into Body Pump and did that for probably 10 months before it got old. I've always been strong so I thought that exercise regimen could help me lose the weight.

I got a Personal Trainer at the Y. She told me that as far as strength goes, I'm there. I have several workouts she designed for me and I do use them. I do strength-training 3 times a week and cardio of some sort at least 5 times a week.

She also told me that eating is my problem. I can't just work out, I have to change more things in how I eat.

So hard for me because I am such a foodie. I'm in the cooking business. It's what I do. I enjoy well tasting food and I don't mind saying I cook pretty dang good. Which I'm sure is the problem.

Objectively speaking, I know my biggest problem is portion control. I know I have to get a handle on it. And it's very difficult for me.

Part of it, I think, is I grew up the oldest of 4 kids. And while we weren't poor, I remember knowing things were tight when we were growing up. I can't place specific events, but I have the memory of feeling like if I didn't fill my plate NOW, that there may not be anymore when the bowls came around again. I don't know why I have that feeling, because we never starved. I can't help but wonder if that plays a part of my eating issues, even though right now, we don't have problems putting food on the table either. And I don't know if I'm somehow trying to justify my eating with this...

Bottom line is I know I have to be better at portions. . Meals are healthy and balanced at home...again, I know the issue is portions. I like nothing better than to stir fry some chicken breast meat with some fresh garlic, a little sesame oil, broccoli, tomato, and spinach and then pour the whole thing over what I know is a giant plate of rice. See, I was doing not so bad until the rice came into the picture.

I'm pretty good at snacks, but I know I can do better. I don't do too many sweets either, but I'm sure I could use some good alternatives to satisfy sweet cravings.

I appreciate your reading my rambling if you got this far.

Hey Mary!

A big welcome to the Disboards. I "know" you from the DVC section. Good to see you. And I really enjoyed reading your story. I am very similar. Portion control is everything. I've lost over 75 pounds - it's more but I wasn't on the scale for years to own the number - and more than half of it is because of the WISHboards. I agree with your trainer. I'm pretty fit and still need to lose. However, just wanted to chime in that you can be a foodie and lose. I've eaten everything during my weight loss. In fact I won't eat anything - healthy or not - unless I love it. I love food. And don't want to change that ever.

So just wanted to say welcome and to chime in that you can lose weight and still eat everything. Moderation and portion control is the key. Sometimes easy - sometimes not. :lmao:

All the best to you,

Lisa

Lisa-

Thanks for the encouragement. I do appreciate it. And good to see someone I "know"! :)

Do you have a favorite tip for portion control?

Welcome to WISH! Glad to have you here.

You can do this! You CAN!

Join in on any of the ongoing challenges, that may offer you some support as you go through your changes toward a healthy lifestyle.

Portion control, if it's a restaurant, I split it in half. Toss it, take it home or share with DH. If it's portion control at home, I try to split the recommended servings into half and eat that about a couple hours apart. Mostly works for me for breakfast. I don't often get to do that at dinner, and sometimes can at lunch.

Welcome!!

Thanks for sharing your story, I know where you are coming from re: portions. It is something I struggle with as well. I have realized that I tend to eat more when I'm starving. If I regulate my hunger, I tend to have more reasonable meals. However, if I skip a meal, then I go overboard. Eating slower has also helped me to feel full faster, and as a result, eat less.

Tiger Lily--

Thanks for the welcome. I'll check out the challenges today and see what they are all about.

scrump - I think that's my problem as well. If I'm starving, I overeat, especially when it's some of my favorites. Regulating hunger is definitely on the list of issues.
