Hi! I usually post over on the CB and sometimes the budget board but my sweetheart husband bought me a new camera so I thought I'd mosey on over to the photography board in the hopes I could soak up some of your knowledge.

I have a Nikon D5000 with the kit lens and a 50-200vr lens. I read the manual but i want to get some other book. Is D5000 for Dummies any good? I thought it might be appropriate because...well, don't make me say it.

Well I can't help on manuals and such, as I don't have a Nikon...but welcome to the Photography board, and congrats on a fine camera! I'm sure it will serve you well, and you've got tons you can learn and improve with it. Just be careful with the L.A.S.* that most DSLR users eventually suffer from - it's contagious too, so just being here, your clock is already counting down.

From one Mom to the next, Welcome!!

IMHO I highly recommend any book that can teach you about the camera that you've just purchased, so the Dummies book sounds like it will work. I think the first step would be getting to know how your equipment operates and what it can do.

Next would be understanding the principals of photography.

There are photography books such as Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure" that many others on this board, both beginner and experienced will recommend. This book will help you with a fundamental understanding of photography principals.

Here is a link to a Nikon web site specifically formulated to help teach you about your camera. http://www.nikondigitutor.com/eng/d5000/index.shtml

Good luck and dig in! You'll be glad you did when you start to take amazing pictures thanks to a little knowledge and understanding from doing your homework.

Be sure to post your pictures here and keep us updated on how you are making out.

Thanks! I notice that everyone seems to have flickr. Is that preferable to photobucket? On PB I can't resize my pictures to make them large enough to really see well when they are posted here.

You should also consider David Busch's Nikon D5000 Guide, as well as Jeff Revell's Nikon D5000 book.

You're going to have to 'kick the tires' so to speak on various photo hosting sites to see which one fits your needs the best.

I went with flicker and, among other things, I like the fact that it's associated with Yahoo. I had signed up for a photo hosting site a couple of years ago (can't remember the name) and after I renewed my fee they went out of business and I lost all those on line versions of my pictures.

If Yahoo goes under I'll know the apocalypse is coming and the last thing I need to worry about will be my pictures!

I have David Busch's Nikon Nikon D90 guide but I haven't read it yet. I thought he was pretty good when I compared him to other authors writing Nikon guides.

I plan on blocking out time and reading my books when DS goes back to school and DH is back to work!!! :cheer2:

Hi, I'm new here too (well, new to posting here but I've been lurking for awhile :)). Just wanted to say that I recently got a Canon T2i and bought the "Dummies" book for it - it's great! Walks you through all the camera's capabilities, explains when/why you'd use them. Very easy to read and understand and it has lots of illustrations (I need pictures :)). I bought a few of the other books recommended here as well, haven't had enough time to get through all the them yet, but for a start, I can highly recommend the Dummies book (assuming the Nikon book is as good as mine). Have fun!

Flickr is nice for the social networking aspect of it. I've got a website for hosting photos, but still use Flickr a lot for networking, checking out other people's work., etc. A bunch of us Flickr Disney photographers actually got a chance to meet up at WDW recently and shoot together, it was great!

Welcome! We like to think that we are one of the best boards on the DIS. You should not see the rude posts here that sometimes show up on the really busy boards.

Be careful here. Yahoo is not doing very well right now. That said, they are more likely to get bought up by someone instead of failing. Chances are that they will eventually be part of Google.

Congrats on your new camera! Looks like you'll have plenty of models to practice on.:)

I also just got a Dummies book (Nikon D40) and have read about 100 pages so far. It is very easy to follow. There are some sections that 'state the obvious' but these books are written assuming the reader has no knowledge of their camera or photography whatsoever. I have learnt a fair bit from it already.

I have spent the last few months reading, reading and reading ...... I use online searches and have used many links and recommendations from this board. I think it is beneficial to get information from a range of sources. I think someone has already mentioned, it doesn't take long for you to find the ones that you prefer and those you don't really like.

Thanks for the welcome and advice. I checked out the digitutor site and I love the video format, thank you! I will have to compare some of the books to decide which is best for now.

I am new also. I am waiting on my Nikon D60 to arrive, and I am about to explode from anticipation. Is there a Dummies book for the D60?

Yes, there is one on Amazon for the D60, written by the same person who did the D40 for Dummies which I have. As I mentioned in my previous post, it's really good as a beginner's guide, particularly if you are new to the world of DSLRs as it is specific to your camera but also explains some fundamental principles of photography. Hope it arrives soon. I was beside myself with impatience when I waited for my camera to arrive when I got it a few months back. :hyper::hyper::hyper:

Hey Magic Mom, it's great to hear about your new camera, and to see you over here on the photo board.
Here is a thread I started some time ago when I first got my D5000 that is kind of a walk through of many of the features of the camera. As I and others experimented with various features, we posted some of our results. There are also some really good comments by many of the better photographers that deal with many of these features.
I hope this might help you get a better understanding of your camera:

Good luck, and have fun shooting away!!!!

Welcome to the DIS photo board. Lots of friendly helpful people here. Don't forget in addition to books there is tons of free info and learning opportunities all around the web if you do a little digging and looking around to find what meets your needs. Also don't forget to search out podcasts relating to photography. There are quite a few out there that you can subscribe to for free.
