You check in 24-hour prior to the first segment - which will be more than 24-hours prior to the second.
You almost always get a great number with a transfer. Though that doesn't do any good if you have a short connection and they start boarding before you get there.

We have about 90 minutes between segments if everything is on time. I think we will easily get to the gate before boarding begins for the connection.
The plane we will take to MCO originates somewhere else and if it lands at Midway on time, I don't think the through passengers will be getting off the plane since there is only about 30 minutes between scheduled landing and take off. Does that sound right? If they get off, do they somehow save their seats?
Anyway, I think the "best seats" to MCO will be taken by the through passengers. If I were one of them, I'd probably move to the exit row or a better seat after the others got off, assuming I could.
We don't have to sit in an exit row, the front or even together. I would just prefer not to sit in a middle seat if I can help it.
