Hey all. DD has expressed intrest in pin trading so we are jumping off the bridge into your world :thumbsup2. I have been buying the kids some pins on ebay for our upcoming trip ... all ones that I do not intend for them to trade. It will just be as a present each night to give hints on what we are doing the next day. Anyway I know I am going to have to get a "lot" of pins I am figuring 4 for each child per day (they are 11 and 13) an 8 day trip so 64 to trade. Hoping to find a good deal on ebay. Anyway I am wondering if I should also buy a starter set for each child on there? I cannot remember how much they are in the parks so I really do not know what is and what is not a good deal. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

really no sense to buy a starter set, just buy a lanyard at the parks and save the extra money for extra pins on Ebay

We have been collecting since the first year WDW starting back in '99, my kids are now 11 and 7 - we have amassed over 10,000 pins - so watch out

We trade all day long - in between rides, on way in park, out of park, in each store... etc... just something to do as you walk to and from each ride, etc... We put 10 pins on each lanyard at day 1, and they trade away. They went thru 120 pins in 3 days, no problem.

Here lies the flaw to your thought process - on day one, they will be excited and trade their 4 pins each in about 10 minutes. If they happy to "like" one of the pins as a "keeper" - now they only have 3 to trade again, etc .... you will probably be done for the day in an hour. Not how you envisioned a day of pin trading?

Instead of the structured way of giving 4 pins a day - fill their layard with 8 - 10. Let them trade away. At the end of the day, let them take off their keepers, and restock the lanyard. By day 3 - 4 - they will probably think all their pins are keepers - but they will have no pins left to trade - this allows them to make decisions on which pins they like, and which they can try and get "better" pins with - letting them make these choices makes them appreciate the pins they have traded for even more - and they understand the concept that when there are no more "traders" left on their lanyard, they are done

this is my 2 cents

if you need to buy extra pins, I'm sure I can find some in my extra pin bags

have fun

WoW! 10,000 pins. I only have about 800 and they take up a lot of space.

Thanks so much for the info David. I do see what you mean about trading with a certain number each day. I guess I will just try and find a lot of about 60 to 70 pins for the trip. We will be there for 7 nights 8 days ... hoping that will be enough for them? If not they will have to use thier own money once get in the park.
Do you happen to know how much just the lanyards are in the parks?

The average is $40-45 for an adult set and $20-30 for a child's lanyard. I would go to Downtown Disney at Pin Traders when you get there. They will set you up!:goodvibes

I'm sorry to hijack this thread, but I, too, am probably going to join the pin trading hype during our December trip to Disney.

Cinderellacm, when you say that an adult lanyard is $40-45, what should I 'typically' expect to receive? I don't necessarily know that I'm interested in trading as much, per se, as I am in purchasing specific pins that I've seen. Are there any "rules" for trading?

Thanks in advance!

The $40-45 lanyard normally have about 8 pins on them. You can buy a lanyard for about $6-8 with no pins if you don't want the pins for trading.

I don't necessarily know that I'm interested in trading as much, per se, as I am in purchasing specific pins that I've seen.

The problem with that logic is you may see a pin you want that you can't buy.
People wear pins that they bought years ago that are no longer available, or purchased at other Disney venues. Also, CMs wear pins that you can only get if you trade with the CMs. You can normally tell these as they have a "hidden Mickey" logo.

Ahhhh, now I see. I think I read about the concept of pin trading about 2 days ago, so I'm still "getting" the concept. Thanks for your response, Daber, that makes perfect sense!

This is some great advice you have gotten. Be careful though, once you begin this hobby you will be forever pinning..lol!

Come to the Dark Side...
We have PINS! :teeth:

agnes!

Buying the adult lanyard starter sets is a ripoff. You can get cheap traders for anywhere from $1.50-$3.00 on ebay.
