New to Gardening

I live in Souther New England, just moved into a wonderful home with a great, sunny deck. Planning on planting in window boxes on rail of deck. Extremely sunny and hot. Could anyone advise what type of flower would survive these hot conditions. Very little shade. Help, help help!!!

Many annuals love the sun! Marigolds, zinnias, petunias (cascading petunias over the edge of the box would look nice with some upright flowers) and begonias are just some of your choices. Water them well once a day and they will bloom their heads off all summer....die off in the winter. Then you can replan for the following year based on what worked best!

You can grow just about anything you want in window boxes. However because it's so sunny you will need to take care as to what plants you need to grow.

Visit your local nursery explain you need plants for window boxes that are in full sun. They will help you choose the correct plants.

As Gina said water, water, water this is the key to having beautiful window boxes. Because the plants are in a small amount to soil, between the sun and the summer heat the soil will dry out quickly. There may be spells when you need to water them twice a day. Also window boxes need to be fertilized regularly.

Good luck and congrats on your new home. Sounds like your deck will be a perfect spot for plants. Dittos to everyones advice. I would also go to a local nursery to find out what works best in your area.

Personally I love big fat geraniums with cascading wave petunias for my deck planters. If your planters are to be permanent maybe you could set up a shared drip system.
