Well, this will be our first trip to Disney - going end of August with the Free Dining. We are staying at the Pop Century - upgraded the dining. The amount of restaurants Disney offers is unbelievable!!! Wondering if anyone could help me out with what restaurants/theme dinners are a must do - 2 adults + 2 kids (boy 9, girl 8).

Thanks for your help!!!

Hi! I always get so excited when I hear of people going for their first Disney trip! Soon you'll be hooked!

As far as restaurants go, as you said, there are so so so many! Here are a few of our favorites, as I'm sure you'll hear from many more DISers. :goodvibes

Liberty Tree Tavern: we've eaten here every trip. We both love the colonial decor, and the food is delicious American comfort food (turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, etc.).

Hollywood Brown Derby: We loved the old Hollywood feel of this restaurant, and my husband says this restaurant has his favorite steak on Disney property. Again, the food was delicious!

Traveling with kids, the 50s Prime Time Cafe would be a fun choice! We've eaten there at lunch for burgers, fries and shakes and had so much fun! The antics there can be pretty funny!!

I hope you have an awesome trip!

I thought I should tell you my very favorite counter service restaurant in all of WDW: Sunshine Seasons in the Land pavilion at Epcot. To me it seems to be so fresh and healthy, unlike many other restaurants that have cheeseburgers and chicken strips. And it has so many options!!!

My second favorite counter service would probably be Pecos Bill's in MK. The portions there are delicious and HUGE!

Good luck planning!!!:thumbsup2

DBF & I went to the following restaurants a few weeks ago:

Boma
'Ohana
Le Cellier
Teppan Edo
San Angel Inn
Biergarten

The only 2 that we raved about were Boma & 'Ohana. Besides Biergarten, the food was good at the other places. I had issues with the sneaky waitress at Le Cellier & I don't think that it's worth 2 credits, but the food was good.

In addition to the ones mentioned Cape May Cafe at the Beach Club the breakfast with Characters is really cute...honestly one of my favorites and not so crowded or loud. and the Seafood Dinner Buffet is out of this world and now includes Crab Legs. This is a family must do, couples must do, or anyone must do...definately not to be missed and one of the other things we love about it is that we can't walk to it while in Epcot and then go back to Epcot when we are done. LOVE this place!

I'll add a few of our favorites: Liberty Tree Tavern ub MK but we prefer lunch over dinner as dinner is a fixed menu and lunch is order off a menu. The Plaza in MK. I love dessert so the banana split for dessert was right up my ally. :) Sci-Fi at HS. Perhaps not the best out there but sitting in a car and watching old sci fi movie clips is a lot of fun for the kids. I believe the burgers and milk shakes are a hit! Boma at AKL is a very good breakfast buffet. I agree with others on Cape May Cafe, character breakfast or dinner buffet, is great along with LeCellier, Teppen Edo, Ohana, 50's Prime Time. We are not adventure eaters so I tend to pick more the normal kind of places. Having fun making your decisions. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Who doesn't LOVE talking about Disney!!!!!!! :thumbsup2

You'll definitely receive some vastly different answers to this question, as it largely depends on your personal tastes.

For me, Artist Point is currently my favorite restaurant. The food has Pacific Norrhwest influences, and the cedar plank salmon was outstanding (as good as or better than salmon from top restaurants in NYC and Philadelphia). For excellent sushi, flatbreads, and a view of Cinderella Castle and Seven Seas Lagoon, California Grill is a great choice. If you're feeling adventurous and want to try contemporary cuisine with African influences, Jiko is another nice restaurant.

Those are my top 3 WDW restaurants, in order.

Chef Mickey's at the Contemporary Resort is a great Character meal. We always go for the dinner.

I also like Les Chefs de France and Biergarden at EPCOT.

You will probably get a ton of mixed answers to this-but here is my 2 cents anyway! We are going in September (10 days-2 adults, DD11 and DS 5) , and the have to's for my family included O'Hana (dinner and breakfast), Cape May Cafe Clambake, Le Cellier, Boma (dinner). We are trying Whispering Canyon, Le Chefs de France, Tusker House, and Garden Grill for the first time. We also enjoy fun/themed restaurants with a different variety of food, and Disney definitely has that! I hope you have a wonderful trip, and have a great dining experience also!:)

As a number of previous posters have said...you will get lots of advice on different restaurants. That said, I will offer a little advice! :thumbsup2

Since this is your first trip, I highly suggest booking ADRs in Restaurants based on the parks you will be in on specific days. There are so many good places to eat and I would not waste any park time by traveling from resort to resort...unless you have a car!

I would research and choose TS places based on your childrens' interests. I know there are conflicting opinions on CRT, but you *have to eat in the castle at least once! That will also free up time one day since it is a 2TS meal.

I would also try and stay away from TS that have gotten consistent bad reviews...like CM for example. There are other Character Meals you can see Mickey (We love Tusker House)!

Good luck deciding. You can't do it all in one trip and that is the beauty of WDW. You''' have something to look forward to your second trip! :goodvibes

Of course it completely depends on your family's tastes, but I'll be happy to add some advice and my own personal faves.

On the regular DDP, for a first trip, I would avoid any meals that require 2 TS credits. You want to maximize your experiences this time (note that I am already assuming you will like it so much that you will be back!).

Your kids will be required to order from the kids meal menu at any non-buffet TS (and at all CS locations). The kids choices are very basic and the portions are not large. If that works for your family (at that age my kid LIVED on mac-n-cheese so it was perfect for us), great! If not, then you want to concentrate your TS meals on buffets. Buffets all have the stereotypical kids-food choices but kids and adults can select from all the items; they are not segregated by age.

Of the buffets, I would particularly recommend Crystal Palace in the MK, Biergarten in Epcot, Cape May Cafe at the BC/YC resort, Boma at the AKL resort, and 1900 PF at the GF resort. CP & 1900PF are character meals; the others are not. At ages 8 & 9 I think you want a few character meals but probably not every single day.

Ohana is one of my all-time favorites but getting an ADR may be a challenge and this is one restaurant that I absolutely would not recommend trying for a walk-up in August during Free Dining. Ain't gonna happen. In fact, I strongly recommend ADRs for all your TS meals. Being tied to a schedule bugs some people, but traipsing around in the Florida heat trying to find someplace to eat that's not a 3-hour wait bugs me more.

Of the TS restaurants I'd recommend Tony's in the MK (good atmosphere), Yak & Yeti in AK (good atmosphere and GREAT food), and pretty much anything that appeals to your tastes in Epcot - just go for something that you can't get at home. Sadly, I would not recommend ANY of the TS in DHS.

Do give some thought to your CS meals as well. If you like hamburgers you can certainly get a hamburger at every single park, but with a little judicious management you can get some pretty awesome CS meals and never touch a burger the entire time you are at WDW. In AK, Flame Tree offers good ribs and chicken. At DHS go to Starring Rolls; at lunchtime they have a couple of cold sandwiches that are delicious plus a big choice of desserts (you get sandwich plus desert plus a side of chips or fruit plus your drink). At Epcot a prior poster already menioned Sunshine Seasons; my other 2 big CS recommendations are Norway and the Boulangerie Patisserie in France. At MK take the resort loop monorail to the Poly and go to Capt Cooks; the Pulled Pork sandwich with fresh house-made potato chips is out of this world and for dessert you can get a serving of the famous Dole Whip ice cream. For a longer mid-day break, take a bus to the Coronado Springs resort and eat at the Pepper Market; fabuous choices there.

Enjoy!

We love to kick off vacation at Chef Mickey's for the kids. The food is just OK, but the atmosphere is so much fun!!!

My DH would not go to WDW without going to California Grill. The food is so so so yummy! Well worth the 2 table service credits. Go around MK fireworks time so you can watch the fireworks from the restaurant or observation deck. So cool.

Crystal Palace at MK is by far the BEST buffet ever! We always go for lunch the day we go to MK. Delish!!!

Have fun planning your first trip! Deciding on dining is one of the best parts of planning!!!! :goodvibes

I don't know if your kids think they are too old for character meals or not, ours of around the same age love them, so character meals are our biggest must-dos. I would recommend Crystal Palace, Ohana, and either Cinderella's Royal Table or Askerhus for sure, although there are lots of others. We always enjoy the Spirit of Aloha luau at the Polynesian Resort, for the show more than the food (although the food is fine). It is 2 dining credits but worth it if you have the credits. For adult dinners there are tons of popular choices- lots in Epcot depending on what kind of food you like.
The more research you do the more fun you will have. I hope you have a great trip and that your family loves WDW as much as ours does!

We love:

Cape May bfast & dinner-I highly recommend this for your Hollywood studios day-its just a short boat ride over from the studios. I like dinner more but the characters in their beach attire @ bfast is alot of fun.

Le Cellier-for lunch...its 1 ts credit and you can still get mushroom filet, pretzel bread and creme brulee for dessert. Yum!!

Crystal Palace for bfast-my son's fav actually convinced him to try Tusker house for bf next trip. I hope its good or I'll never hear the end of it :thumbsup2

1900 Park Fare dinner-the food is pretty good but the characters are great here. My son(15) and god daughter(9) had so much fun here on our last trip.

Tony's-we've always had good experiences here. I love the Lady and the Tramp theme and the Pistashio creme brulee.

Kona and Via Napoli were good on our last trip too!!

Have fun planning~its almost as much fun as the trip :goodvibes

If you ask my children they will tell you their favorite restaurants are Sci-Fi (lunch- better choices), Crystal Palace (breakfast), and Boma (dinner or breakfast. My husband and I really enjoyed Teppan Edo & the kids liked the food being cooked in front of them.

Even at their age (10 & 8) we still do at least one character meal. We all enjoy it. No one's too old for characters at Disney:)

There is nothing like having an ADR at Crystal Palace before the park opens (ours was at 8:05am) and walking down an empty Main Street. My boys still talk about it.

One thing we did find was that our oldest son (just turned 9 on our last trip) was not satisfied with the kids meals. The kids portions were often very tiny (think 4inch round pizza). He often was still hungry and ate some of my meal. He is a very skinny kid and I would not consider him a huge eater, just average for a boy his age. This year he is 10 so considered an adult by Disney. His brother will be 8 on out next trip. We have decided to do mostly buffets so that they are not limited to the kids menu/tiny portions.

Have a great trip!

Musts to me would be California Grill, 1900 park fare, ohana, and prime time if you have kids for the last two! :)
