Hello, and welcome..

Personally I prefer the Magic, due to it being a 7 nighter, as opposed to the 3 and 4 night Wonder cruises..

Formal night as well as semi-formal is a very wide range..Some have tuxex, some shirts..Some women wear fancy gowns, and others plain..There is topsiders which is more casual, and a buffet style if you prefer to eat there..It is open nightly..

A guarantee is just that..Let's say you book a cat 9 guarantee, it assures you that you will be at least in that cat..perhaps even higher, but never lower..

Hope this helps.. :goodvibes

Have only been on the Magic, because we like 7 night cruises.
I have dressed up and I have worn a nice pantsuit.
They guarantee your category, but they don't tell you your room number, it is assigned at the last minute in your guaranteed category, unless you get a free upgrade.

We like the Magic, because it does longer trips.

Guarantee can also save you some money if you are not picky about stateroom location.

As for which ship, Magic vs. Wonder, they are pretty much the same ship -- the primary difference is that the Magic does the 7 day cruises, while the Wonder does the 3 & 4 day trips. Also, the dry dock schedule can make a difference in the ships (they alternate every other year). For example, the Magic goes into dry dock this year (October?), with the Wonder going into dry dock the next year, so major structural changes (such as expanding the spa and adding "dive-in movies") will appear on the Magic this fall before they are put on the Wonder next fall.

We prefer the Magic, longer cruise. The Wonder is ok, but will take the Magic whenver we can.

Hubby wears a tux, I wear a gown for formal nights. For semi-formal nights I wear little black dress hubby wears black suit. We probably won't be taking these clothes with us anymore, because now topsiders serves the same menu as the dining room, and we don't have to dress up. The service is wonderful, and it doesn't take two hours for dinner. Hubby said we could eat there every night..lol, and skip the dining room. So, topsiders it is.

3. I have seen the term "Guarantee" what does this mean when used with a stateroom catagory?
That means disney will assign your room and you take what they give you and you are guaranteed at least the category you paid for, sometimes you get upgraded for free, sometimes not.

Thanks again for the info

1) Like the decor of the Magic better...we are art deco freaks....we like the colors better as well....subtle browns and beiges...the colors on the Wonder are more "blue-ish"

2) we dress up for formal and semi formal nights - suits for men, dresses for women....we like the ambiance of the dining rooms, as well as the experience...we feel it is a highlight of the cruise...nevertheless, you can dine at Topsiders, or have Plutos, Pinochios, or of course room service...

3) Guarantee, or GTY,means you will receive at least the stateroom cat you book under...

There is formal and a semi-formal night only on the 7-night cruises on the Disney Magic.

DCL now gives definitions for "formal" and "semi-formal." Here's what the official DCL website says in the Onboard Dining FAQ.

What should I wear to dinner?

Dining Dress requirements vary by venue or theme night on your cruise. In general, most meals are "Cruise Casual" -- no shorts, swimwear or tank tops. Most cruises also have special theme nights with additional attire requirements. Here's a breakdown of these events by cruise itinerary.

On 3-night cruises:

  • First night: cruise casual — no shorts, swimwear or tank tops
  • Second night: pirate or tropical deck party
  • Final night: "dress-up night" — jacket for men, dress or pantsuit for women

On 4-night cruises:

  • First night: cruise casual — no shorts, swimwear or tank tops
  • One pirate or tropical night (deck party)
  • One "dress-up night" — jacket for men, dress or pantsuit for women
  • Final night: cruise casual — no shorts, swimwear or tank tops

On 7-night cruises:

  • First night: cruise casual — no shorts, swimwear or tank tops
  • Three additional "cruise casual" nights — no shorts, swimwear or tank tops
  • One pirate or tropical night (deck party)
  • One formal and one semi-formal night — formal wear for men: tuxedo or suit; for women: gown or dress; semi-formal wear for men: suit/jacket; for women: dress or pantsuit.

Dress for dinner at Palo on all cruises:

  • Men: dress shirt or jacket
  • Women: dress or pantsuit

Overall, the dining dress requirements are very casual. But these are beautiful dining rooms serving multi-course dinners. Some passengers observe the dining dress requirements more closely than others. Except at Palo, I don't think they turn away passengers who are "underdressed."

For formal night on the Magic, if a man doesn't own a suit and doesn't want to rent a tuxedo, he'll be fine with jacket and/or dress shirt and tie (even though that doesn't really match the definition of formal).

Almost everybody dressses in the spirit of the dining dress requirements.
