Hello, We are a family of 4 thinking about buying an RV so we can take our elderly dog on vacation with us. I'm wondering what people do with their pets while they go to the parks. Do they have to go to the kennel or can you keep them in the RV. Any insight would be helpful as we would be brand new to camping. Thanks.

You will have to stay in a pet loop. This costs an extra 5 bucks a day. A lot of campers keep their pet in the RV all day - which would probably be a good idea with a senior citizen pet like yours. Just be sure the AC is working and you check on the pooch during the day in case of a power outage. The FW kennel is available, at an additional cost, and you will have to walk your pet a couple of times a day since they do not provide this service. The kennel is clean, air conditioned and staffed by a great group who love dogs. It is available for day guest or overnight guest. We use the kennel for our dog during the day and bring him back to the camper each night. There are nice areas around the pet loops to walk your dog, and poop bags are available around each pet loop.

We have not been to WDW with our dalmation yet, and we may never take her because she is so old and probably could not handle the drive. While at other campgrounds we leave her in the camper most of the day alone. I turn the air up on high or the radio to block outside sound and we fill up the toilet so she has plenty of water (she drinks out of the toilet at home too..refuses to drink from a water bowl ever since she was a puppy). I leave plenty of food for her in the kitchen area and she has been fine.
Just remember to take the dog potty before you leave them all day, or you could have a mess when you get back..:rotfl:

Our bassett hound and yorkshire terrier stay in our motorhome. Our schedule is to get up in the morning and walk the pups, go to the parks for a while, come back to the m/h about mid afternoon for a break and doggie time with a walk. Then we'll go back to the parks for the evening, return to the m/h for another walk and bedtime.

Our dogs are very happy staying in familiar surroundings with their toys, food and water. We also leave on a tv for them. They love to go camping!

Happy Camping!

If you are buying a new RV have them add a Fan-tastic fan it is a fan with a thermostat. We set the thermostat crack all the window and if there is a power failure the fan comes on because it runs on the house battery to cool the RV.

Thanks for everyone's help. These boards always provide so much info!

You know I never even considered how my dog will handle the ride(from NY) until Jennifer293 mentioned that her elderly dalmation may not handle the drive too well. My beagle is a nervous wreck pretty much all the time, even when he was young. I will have to reconsider taking him. But I'm so glad that leaving him in the RV is an option. He wouldn't be able to handle a kennel. We kenneled him years ago, he got so nervouse he ended up with a GI bleed from ulcers and his nose was rubbed raw from trying to get out of the cage. Poor thing just shakes at anything new. We've used a dog sitter since, but his doggie brother passed away recently and I would hate to leave him alone to go on vacation. It is very encouraging to hear dogs loving camping.

Rudy our dog loves camping. Cheryl and I took a trip to FW about 3 year ago and we left Rudy at home with my mom. Well on the second day I had to rent a car because we had a Motor Home at the time drive back to Jupiter to pick Rudy up. When mom call she said Rudy would not eat and he just sat in the corner and was mad. So yes dog like camping.

We've had two Miniature Schnauzers, and they both loved to camp! Kassie knows when a trip is imminent, and she gets so excited that it takes her a day or two on the road to settle down. Her favorite activity is riding in the golf cart. I'm so disappointed to find out that FW doesn't allow animals in the carts.

We have always had a dog with us camping as they are family too.Just another reason we LOVE Ocean Lakes. Everyone has a dog on their cart. And we don't pay extra for the dog. So what does they extra 5.00 per day do????? We have stayed at FW and wondered what the extra charge was for. We only paid 3.00 for extra adults. Anyone have any ideas?

We are staying at Lakewood in June and while dogs are allowed in the campground our dalmation is NOT!! She is considered to be an aggresive breed!! She goes with us to all the places just a few hours from home and all they care is that her shots are up to date. Oh well.. she will be staying at MIL's house (she has an Airedale Terrier to play with).

We could never put her in a kennel either. When Dh was in the military he had to go to Puerto Rico for 2 weeks while I was home with her everyday she sat by the front door and cried everyday and refused to eat but little handfuls of food. So that will never be an option for her.

That money goes to the "just another way to suck money out of you" fund!!:rotfl2:
