New to AP and I have a few questions

I am new to the AP world. We're purchasing them in July of this year. Anyway, can someone tell me if a AP room discount is usually available in some form or another? My DH and I are planning a long weekend trip for our anniversary in January and I'm wondering what the chances are of there being an AP discount at this time.

AP room discounts are not always available. I have had an AP for the past 6 years, and have found many times when there was no discount offered.

I'd like to throw in a question if the OP doesn't mind.

I know you can get AP plus dining - purchasing the dining plan without having to buy a day ticket.

Question is do you have to have an AP room rate in order to do this or can you use another pin or promo room rate and then tell them on the phone you'd like to add AP dining (aka dining plan with an AP ticket)? And yes I do know I'd have to produce the AP pass at the resort.
