New to Air BnB

This is so ridiculous. What happens if you just don't do anything on the list?
No idea. Most places I stayed at with Airbnb had a minimal list such as make the beds and take out the trash (which I don't think is that bad), but the last time I stayed at an Airbnb was in Japan and the owner basically had my friend and I clean this entire apartment. Granted the place was small but still.

If the guest/s have to clean the place before they leave, what is the cleaning fee for? :confused3

Almost sounds like a resort fee at hotels where you have to pay a fee but get nothing in return.

I agree with most here. I used to find deals on air bnb, but now find it too expensive because of all the fees. If I was looking for something for a longer time or for a large group I would check it out, but normally I don't bother anymore.

The cleaning fee and house rules are set by the owner, it's not an Airbnb policy. I don't think it's the norm for there to be a huge list of chores for the guest to complete. I think it's something that happens occasionally, but when it does people complain about it on the internet so it seems more common than it is.

Personally, I would not rent a house if I knew guests were expected to wash linens and make beds. Not because I'm not willing to do the work, but because I would not trust that the guest before me cleaned things properly. I'm probably more particular than most people, but it would gross me out. It would also make me question the quality of the host if they think it's acceptable to require guests to clean.

I just had a guest ask me this week if we would remove the cleaning fee if he cleaned. I declined his reservation request. There is absolutely no way that any guest is going to clean the house to my standards, so I would have to go in after them and do everything anyway.

So what I did, was look on VRBO and AIBNB at houses that would fit our needs for our upcoming trip.
I then found out who the host was and googled whether or not they had their own site/reviews.
I found a great company that we are using in May-and booked directly with them(even got 10% off for being a first time customer) the fees were lower etc.
One thing I will note-if you are staying in any kind of gated community that boasts all these amenities, make sure you have access to them as a renter vs an owner-and also whether or not there is a charge for obtaining a "guest pass" for them while you're there.
Most include it in the rental fee but some communities require you to pay a fee per car in order to utilize their amenities

I've never understood the appeal of this type of accommodation, but that makes it even worse. It's such a scam.
I think for some folks-especially a really large group...it ends up being a cheaper option than multiple hotel rooms. We've rented houses a few times vs hotels with our larger group(13 of us this time) but have never used Airbnb or Vrbo...always through the property management company directly...the Airbnb fees are atrocious

I can't been imagine sharing a house with extended family on a vacation. Sounds like a nightmare scenario to me. 😆

I want my own hotel room, and I don't want to do ANY chores.

Trust me...I did not make the choice for the group-I'm with ya 🤣 🤣 🤣

Any host who charges cleaning fees is a greedy and selfish sleazebag. Cleaning is YOUR cost of doing business. Bury the fee in the rent or eat it yourself.

Any guest who pays the cleaning fee is an idiot sucker.

I feel this way about a security deposit too. Isn't that what insurance is for?

Wow. Tell us how you really feel. Lol

Cleaning fees have always been a part of how short term rentals work. It is not a hotel where the housekeeper takes 15 minutes to clean a room. Our rental takes at least 3 hours to turn over (and it’s a small two bedroom). Expecting someone to do three plus hours with or work for no pay seems pretty ridiculous to me.

Why would I “bury the fee in the rent” when I can just be upfront and honest about what it costs to turn the house over after someone’s stay? I would have to dramatically increase the per-night price which would make it significantly more expensive for guests staying multiple nights. That seems way more greedy and sneaky to me.

We've rented cottages or a condo from the same management company for the past 5 years. We found them on either Vrbo or Airbnb, can't remember which. Anyhow, the owner messaged me directly the first year and said if I booked direct I didn't have to pay the site fees- YAY! Cottage rental is weekly, and we bring our own sheets, towels, kitchen towels, so we take them all home with us when we go. It's worked out well- she even gave us a return-guest discount of 10%- until this year. No more return guest discount, rates have gone up $50 a night (! that's a lot when renting for 2 weeks), cleaning fee is $250, damage deposit is $500 (but it's refundable, they've always returned our money- without interest- within a week). The cottage is lovely, 2 bedrooms, LR, dining area, full kitchen, full bath, nice sunroom, 5 min walk to the ocean, gas grill, etc. It's near where I grew up, my sis and brother and their families (kids are all in their 20s-30s now), my cousins are within an hour's drive, so it's really been ideal for us. However, this is probably our last year. This place IS reasonable for the area- about $330 a night for a full cottage/house- but it's just a lot for 2 weeks now, even without paying the Vrbo/Airbnb fees. If we hadn't already been planning get-togethers and such, we probably wouldn't be going this year, but I'm not quite ready to give it up- and if we aren't rebooking, there isn't a prayer of finding a free week to rent. (FYI hotel rooms, without roaches, are about $350+ in this area during the summer...)

No. Insurance rates goes up with claims. We’ve been renting beach houses for a while, even before Airbnb/vrbo started, there have always been cleaning fees and security deposits. The beach houses we rent are worth millions.

My AirBnB story. I booked one for a 3-day trip. It was listed as having an entire condo to yourself. Great I thought. The pictures looks nice. The reviews were great. The host supper friendly through email/messages. As my trip got closer I started to take a closer look at this condo I booked. It was only then that I realized it wasn’t a true condo. No kitchen, no separate living space. It was basically a hotel room in an owner owned “vacation rental” complex. That was totally my own fault. It was nice enough room. Just not what I was imagining as a condo. Cost was on par with the hotel I had previously booked. So no real savings.

So make sure you read carefully, ask questions and don’t get taken in by buzz words.
