New t-shirts ruined by washing

I made 6 t-shirts last week and the instructions for the product I used said specifically to WASH BEFORE WEARING (after transfer was applied) I just did and EVERY single shirt is ruined...I am so bummed out right now! We leave for Disney next Sunday and I now have to scramble to find t-shirts again (hubby had to drive down to RI to get two of the large size) I don't think I am going to use the same transfer product as it was relatively expensive compared to others I've seen (I was at Joann Fabrics so I just bought it while I was there) I think I am going to go with a more popular name brand.
The designs were Mickey Heads with a character and each persons name. The ink just flaked off....I followed manufactures instructions and am a professional sewer so I am quite used to fabrics and it's fibers so I am confident it wasn't the application process.
Has this happened to anyone else?
:confused3

You should always wash & dry the shirts before you put the transfers on. If you don't then they will get ruined.

Did you wash them inside out after applying the transfer? Did you wash them before doing the transfer without fabric softener?

I had this happen on one shirt, I think the transfer sheet may have been old. I usually use the transfer from Printworks at ACMoore.

I just dug out the instructions for my shirts I'm doing this week.

Wash in cold water, no fabric softener or bleach.
Dry on normal setting, no dryer sheet.

wait 24 hours before washing or wearing garment, I usually never wash it a second time before we wear them for the event.
To prolong vibrancy, wash inside out with cold water, no bleach, remove from wash promptly, lay flat to dry.

I followed manufactures instructions to the letter

the shirts were washed before the transfers were put on
the transfers sat a day or so before they were ironed on
the shirts sat for a week before they were washed

I thought perhaps it was because they were a 50/50 blend but the manufacturer said that or 100% cotton were good choices...I went out today and bought 6 new t-shirts. I had to get a mix of colors this time, the previous ones were all lime green....and this time I bought Avery transfers....I have my fingers crossed and I am NOT washing them before I wear them
I just wanted to hear if anyone else had a similar bad experience

Your posts are a bit confusing. One said you washed before putting on the transfer and one said you washed after putting the transfer on.

It might have been the 50/50 blend. There is also a possibility that your iron is calibrated to the wrong temperature. Also, did you leave the steam on when you weren't supposed to? :scratchin I wouldn't wash them after putting the transfers on.

sorry about that in my original post I assumed that by saying I followed manufacturers instructions people would understand I prewashed the garments.

I reprinted them yesterday and will redo them this week. Hopefully I will have better results!

I just used those same transfer papers for my fish extenders - bought at Joann's - "Tailor Iron-On Dark T-shirt transfer" - they're TERRIBLE! I followed the instructions to a T - temperature, press times - set times etc - they tried to peel up when I took the parchment cover sheet off. I ended up having to go round the edges with puffy paint to keep them on. No WAY would they stand up to washing.

I (originally) used Transfer Magic from Joann Fabrics. I feel very confident I followed all manufactures directions. Just not (imho) a good product.
I have since redone all the shirts and used Avery transfer paper this time...when I first printed them out I was concerned that the ink faded as it dried on the transfer paper but then when I ironed them on the heat made the colors 'pop' and they are really bright! I just packed them up in my carry on (not taking any chances). We have a 7AM flight tomorrow morning (stay away Hurricaine Bill!)
I have not washed them (again - taking no chances) but will update this after we wear and wash them.

I always use Avery and never had any issues, my DD has a shirt I made her with the picture of her and Miley Cyrus 2 yeas ago, and she wanted to wear that shirt almost every day and until this day the transfer is fine. I don't use the dyer for all my transfers or tie dye, just wash them regular and hang them to dry.
