Just to be my normal bearer of bad news, there are two storms to watch out there, Phillipe and one without a name yet. That one seems to be more of a threat to Florida, but at a low level storm at the moment

As long as Philipe stays on this track it should be OK

There is just no let up of them is there? I bet people over there breath a sigh of relief once the hurricane season is over for another year.

who comes up with the list of names.....
the other day when i was watching the weather, the guy said, well the next letter up is "p", and the name is phillipe....which is like a bad joke (hey...isn't that "f"?)...

and the name up after rita is stan....somehow "stan" doesn't 'sound' like a hurricane......too neighborly sounding.....
foreign names are best.....easier to hate....(camille, hugo, katrina)....

I knew all about the fact that each years storms are named alphabetically (and names are decided in advance) and alternate male and female, but I didn't know until just a few days ago that if a hurricane makes landfall and causes a massive amount of damage, the name of it is 'retired' and never used again. For example, there will now never be another Camille.

I suppose it's to stop people saying "remember how bad Hurricane Agnes was" and getting a reply of "which one - the '97 or the '86?".

i'm originally from tornado alley....unlike hurricanes, tornados aren't named....i guess because there are just too many of them..........

I read somewhere that they have a list of names which are rotated every 10 years or so. I think it is relatively recently they introduced male names.

I was just reading a post about hurricanes on another messageboard I frequent and thought I should share it with you as it is pretty shocking. It's clearly shaping up to be the worst year for hurricanes (at least in terms of the amount of them) on record.

The current system of naming Atlantic storms alphabetically began in 1953, and Hurricane Rita marks only the SECOND time since then that we've reached the letter "R" (most years you rarely even get past "M"). The only other time was in 1995 for Hurricane Roxanne - however this happened on 8th October 1995, a whole three weeks later into the season than we are now. They eventually got up to the letter "T" in '95.

This year after Rita we've potentially got Stan, Tammy, Vince and Wilma, and then apparently they're named according to the Greek alphabet. I don't think it's out of the question that we'll see a Hurricane Alpha this season. I hope not, but it could well be.
