I hope this is the correct thread to post but does anybody know when Disney plans to open the new Star Wars park?

I'm looking to schedule our next Disney trip but I want to make sure the new Star Wars park is open.

It's not a park, but a land within Disney Hollywood Studios.

I wouldn't recommend scheduling any trip based on wanting something specific open. (short of just waiting to schedule until after it's open). I'm not sure you could even schedule something right now for when all the Avatar stuff to be open at AK.

If they are starting construction in January, it shouldn't take 4 years. They are building on existing property, not excavating from scratch like at AK.

lol. You aren't familiar with large scale construction are you? DH is an ex-contractor. I can tell you right now, hell will freeze over before SWL is open in 2018. 2020 is a very realistic estimate, maybe 2019. After all, it took what 3 years to complete the Fantasyland expansion? That wasn't "from scratch", either. Building around existing areas is actually harder than starting from scratch.

Just so you understand this is not a new park. There will only be a Star Wars section in the Studios park that will have a few attractions including the existing Star Tours.

this week they are moving backstage offices around, specifically the offices that were right behind Backlot Tour so construction is set to start in January, but I agree that a 2020 date of completion is more realistic, also remember that there will be 2 brand new "lands" Star Wars and Toy Story

Ummm... dare I mention the Fantasyland expansion? The work was announced in September 2009 and the 7 Dwarfs Mine Train (the last piece of it) didn't open until May 2014. Granted, I think they want to move quickly on the HS work, but I would be surprised to see the new land(s) done before 2019.

It shouldn't have taken 4 years to build and open 7DMT, either, but it did.

It depends on how motivated Disney is to add more workers to the construction cost. I don't think people postponed trips waiting for 7DMT, there were plenty of other things to do at MK. With Star Wars and Toy Story, there isn't a lot left at DHS during the construction. People will be chopping at the bit to see Star Wars Land. They will want to ride the coat tails of the movie popularity, they are planning 1 new movie a year. It might not be 2018 but I don't think it will be as late as 2020 or 2021.

We are going back in 2018 and have no expectations that either Star Wars Land or Toy Story Land will be open by then.

If they get these finished before 2020 I would be surprised!

Based on all permits submitted, there is expected to be "expansion" outside the existing footprint, new roads and parking lot areas into the wetlands to the east. All of this is expected to be behind, part of or around the new SW area. If the entire thing were to be built within the existing park, it's not an expansion but rather a renovation. Do I think it will take 4 years? Maybe but I think the pressure will be on with the success of the film and it would be in their best interest to put this in high gear. They could be doing the work in Toy Story Land (already land prepped) while they do the land preparation for SW.

7 Dwarfs Mine Train was never part of the original plan for New Fantasyland. There was a plan for multiple Princess homes with meet & greet and activities, much like Enchanted Tales. "...Disney World will construct individual areas -- be it a castle, cottage or chateau -- where guests can interact with some of the company's best-known princesses and other characters from their movies. Children will be able to dance with Cinderella, celebrate Aurora's birthday with the Good Fairies, or play a role with Belle in a performance in the library of the Beast's castle...."

After much discussion it was decided New Fantasyland was too girl oriented and something needed to be brought in for boys. A ride had to be designed and then built and there would be the closure of Snow White to move Princesses there. The train is also the first of it's kind to be designed so not like they could just copycat an existing train. I believe this announcement came in 2011

Did it seem to take forever because of the area's extended timeline? Yes. But it can't be clocked from the day one announcement.

Yes, I remember all that. I considered not mentioning 7DMT because of the change. But even without that, the Fairytale Hall renovation didn't complete until Fall of 2013 so it was still 4 years from announcement of the Fantasyland renovations to that being complete. Who is to say there won't be design changes in the Star Wars or Toy Story lands that would set back completion on those lands? I just wouldn't plan on traveling in 2018 to see Star Wars land. I think that's way too optimistic given Disney's track record.

I responded because you did say from the announcement of New Fantasyland until the opening of 7 Dwarfs. Those were two different plans of the expansion and the two dates can not be connected.

Fairytale Hall was also not part of the original announcement. Princesses were to meet in their cottages located where the mine train now sits. After the Mine Train was decided and Princesses had no where to go, the Fairytale Hall was announced in February 2012. Snow White did not close until May 31. Fairytale Hall opened September 18, 2013 only 15 months later and somewhat ahead of expected. It also can not be connected to 2009 announcement date.

Neither were part of the New Fantasyland plan unveiled in 2009. Neither of these attractions builds would I consider a negative in the construction timeline. Personally I am very glad they made the changes because a whole neighborhood of Enchanted Tales would be boring.

I'm not predicting any completion date. We have yet to see a start. I'm not saying there won't or will be changes with Star Wars, as with all things Disney until it exists in 3D form and open, anything is possible. I honestly do believe one reason nothing has happened at the park , not even one tiny wall is that maybe they are waiting to see the response to the movie, the cancellation of SWW etc to fine tune a plan. I'm hoping the movie proves they need to go a little bit bigger and better. My point was that the projects given as examples won't work for this scenario.

Where in Hollywood Studios are they adding it? They must need a lot of space.
