I've been hearing rumors about this but not sure if it is actually true. Does anyone have any info on this? :)

You might be interested in this discussion going on over at the Parks Board. Basically a lot of people believe that Disney is already shooting a new movie, but there has been no official announcement by Disney as to any replacement.

Disney isn't going to give official word if they are shooting a new film or not. Its 99% sure that they are. Shanghai will be the first in 2015 to open with the new film. DCA next because of the 60th anniversary. Shanghai and WDW will be getting a soaring over the world of sorts according to reports. They filmed over disneyland in march and have been working on filming over WDW. Disney parks are no fly zones so it comes quite obvious something is up when flight are scheduled and happening over these areas. Soarin needs it they need to update, and refurb. The film currently soarin over cali has over stayed its welcome.

Now that IMAX has their new 4K 3D camera in production, that rumor has a little more weight.

The other issue is that Disney will need to replace each of it's IMAX projection systems with a Digital Projection.

Very interesting information about the new camera. I actually kind of hope they will not change the film in DCA. I liked it there. It made sense and I was visiting California and planning a drive up the Pacific Coast Highway later that week. It really brought it home for me. It would be nice for WDW to get the new film after Shanghai. It makes more sense in Epcot.

That is a matter of opinion, and I have no objections with the current film.

Having said that, progress at WDW is inevitable, and I just hope that the successor is 3/4ths as good as the original...

I can add some insight, they definitely filmed early in the spring in WDW, I have a really reliable source who has never steered me wrong and was actually part of the filming work at EPCOT.

I'm not saying its bad I like the attraction as is now but I'd much rather have soarin over the world than soarin over California.

Yes they have supposedly filmed at Epcot and some resorts. The MK filming that people thought was for soarin was for the mine train.

Quite honestly, I think this actually makes for a better theme... you "board / take off" in Orlando, fly over the scenic U.S. of A., and "land" in Disney California. This makes more sense to me from a theming perspective than to take off from Orlando and fly over Orlando :confused3

I don't want a fly over Orlando I want a flight around the world which is supposedly coming.

The flight over the world with different park endings is going to be a Shanghai exclusive at least til 2016 since the Chinese co-owners are paying for it but it is coming.

But first they need to get a new projector and a second theatre before worrying about the film footage.

according to sources upgrades are coming to the theaters at WDW including new projectors. Also soaring at WDW already has two theater there is talk about adding a third. Disney is filming for a new film for DCA that is supposed to be first after Shanghai opens. Next in line is WDW which probably wouldn't get their upgrade until 2016. Yes Shanghai is getting an exclusive film but that doesn't mean it can't come to other parks in some way. Disney is filming it o they could cut and add pieces to the film as they deem necessary.

But the film isn't in 3D (and I don't expect that would change). Also, the digital cameras have lower resolution.

The next film will be in 3D and it will not be Film, it will digital. For IMAX 3D, 2 4K projectors are overlayed on the screen so you have an 8K composited image.
in 3D, each eye will have its own separate 4K image. Currently IMAX 3D is only 2K per eye.

People will riot when Soarin' is closed for refurb. I mean, I agree that a refurb and new video are necessary. But that rides portion of Epcot would be so very boring without Soarin.

Test Track closed for a long time did people riot then? TT and Soarin are really the only E-ticket level attractions in Epcot.

I would just like to point out that Disneyland will most likely get the upgrade first before WDW. They are planning big things for the 60th Disneyland resort anniversary and Soarin looks to be one of them. Soarin over California will get a new HD film upgrade and special effects upgrades. No word on any 3D work.
This is coming from MiceChat a pretty good disneyland insider site.

First off - there are two theaters in both California and epcot. The rumored closing in California would take both theaters down at the same time, but Soarin' out there isn't NEARLY as popular as in Florida. Once they get the movie in California, then they'll schedule the conversion @ Epcot. The do have the option that they could just take down one theater at a time. The lines would be even longer with only one theater going. I wouldn't expect the conversion to take particularly long, since with the exception of the projector(s) it is all software conversion.
