Hi,

I was trying to book my friends into building #12 at OKW last month. They are smokers. On the OKW coded map it is a smoking optional building. It is now a completely N/S building.

Also, OKW used to have 3 smoking optional buildings. Now they have 1 and a half. Those two buildings are 19 and 41. I can't remember which is the half and which is the entire building.

And the CM told me that OKW, and I suppose DVC in general, is going the way of Disneyland which I am guessing is smoke free.

Interesting. I don't know what these changes will bring. There are so many ways of looking at the situation. Great for non-smokers on one hand (people getting smoking rooms checking in late will be at a minimum with less S rooms or never with none) but might it bring more abuse of smoking in non-smoking rooms? Hmmmm.

Eventually Disney will go NS totally and I for one think it will increase the number of people smoking in a NS room. Time will tell. I hope they come up with a penalty system like Marriot did when they went total NS.

Interesting. We were at a Westin property last weekend and they are now completely smoke free, I wonder if the Swan and Dolphin are headed that way too or perhaps they have already made the switch. There was an informational card in the Westin room about them being smoke free stating that if you for some reason chose to smoke in your room there would be a $200 charge. I think the possibility of being fined $200 would dissuade most people from lighting up in the room. I think this is definitely the wave of the future, smoke just causes furnishings to deteriorate that much more rapidly and hotels have massive wear and tear already.

From what I've read and heard, the penalty systems do work provided the penalty is high enough ($250 vs $100). So the question in my mind is, would Disney enforce it? They don't seem to like to enforce their own rules.

And please, please, please make the NS rule apply to the balconies as well! I've never been in a room that's been smoked in, but I've had several stays where we couldn't use the balcony very much. It's particularly bad at AKL where you pay extra for savannah view so you can see the animals and then are driven back inside due to smokers.

An enforced penalty will work just fine. $250 per occurrence with eviction the third time. And contrary to some nay sayers, it is fairly simple to be sure you have the right party in question so you are not charging today for someone who was there a couple of days ago. I too think all NS is on the horizon.

Before or after the CRV, LOL.

I too hope for NS 100%. (And then maybe Non Snoring too!)

I vote for 100% non-smoking buildings including while on the balconies. I agree with LisaS, I really don't enjoy sitting on my balcony and smelling second hand smoke.

I agree with you on both counts! I for one would be thrilled if ALL sleeping rooms EVERYWHERE were non-smoking, but unless there is a penalty for smoking in them, the effect will be to make those of us who must have non-smoking for medical reasons have to suffer from violations. A rule that isn't enforced is worse than no rule at all.

Just look at how they DO NOT enforce the smoking only in designated areas at the parks!!! As far as I'm concerned, Disney has only paid "lip service" to the IDEA of non-smoking, but unless they enforce it everywhere, it doesn't solve anything.

I can't help but think Disney has already had many smoke filled meeting about all aspects of going non-smoking. I am sure they have discussed and decided already just what to do and what kind of penalities to impose on those who decide the rules do not apply to them.
My only hope is it includes the balconies and has a stiff fine that is enforced to go along with it. My only question is why did it takes soooooo long...smjj

I can confirm that are now 1 1/2 buildings at OKW that are "smoking optional".

At this time, building 12 is entirely non-smoking. Building 19 is still entirely "smoking optional" and building 41 is about 1/2 non-smoking. The entire third floor still allows smoking (these are all 2BR villas) and the first and second floors only the left end of each floor still allows smoking (these are made up of one 2BR, one 1BR and one Studio on each floor). All others in building 41 are non-smoking. There are now 4 non-smoking 2BRs, 2 non-smoking 1BRs and 2 non-smoking Studios in building 41. (5-2BRs, 2-1BRs and 2- Studios are still smoking optional.)

These changes are the result of the number of requests for smoking/non-smoking villas at the resort.

Last year I ws told at the OKW front desk that if you are in a non-smoking building at OKW and let's say your neighbor is smoking on the balcony, you can call the front desk and they are supposed to send someone to let the smoker know that even the balcony is supposed to be smoke free. I know this sounds nit-picky and I really try not to be but we had a split stay 1 week 1 BR, weekend studio, next week 1BR and we were given the studio prtion next to the 1BR we were in, at that check in I mentioned that we would not be able to take the room since the people who were in there were smoking in there for the week, and on the balcony all week--we couldn't use the balcony and we could smell smoke throught he adjoining door-it was bad--DS had to really load up on his meds. When I told the check-in CM she asked why I didn't call and complain. I said well, I didn't want to rock the boat--she said it wouldn't have been any trouble and they would have been evicted if it continued after they were warned! I was surprised by this and promised to "tattle" next time.

I am all for the 100% NS. If Disney needs me to become the enforcement officer, I think that I can do the job. My DS4 can be my deputy. Everywhere we go, he yells, "Yuck Smoking!" He will yell it out the window of the Explorer when we are at stoplight and someone is smoking next to us.:thumbsup2

I honestly think I'd be fine if DVC went totally non-smoking like they did in Disneyland. DH and I honeymooned at the Grand Californian this summer, and I'm a smoker. I didn't have a problem at all with the fact that I couldn't smoke in the hotel or at the pool. There were a reasonable amount of ashtrays outside of the room and just outside of the pool area. I would have my cig in the morning when we were walking out for coffee. When we were ready to go to bed, I'd usually go downstairs and smoke one before sleep.

Slightly inconvenient, yes, but I've never smoked in my house and I don't like smoking in hotel rooms, so the fact that I had to go a little "out of the way" didn't really bother me.

I think the issue is that in WDW they are not enforcing the policy as they should be. It doesn't seem to be as much of a problem in Disneyland as it is in WDW - maybe the smoking gestapo is just more forceful out there, LOL.

Just curious, does anyone yell back "yuck global warming!"

No, but they probably should. I personally do not like the looks that I get from the other drivers. While me dw and I do not smoke, I have never taught him to act that way or even acted that way myself.

LMAO!!! I was going to post the same thing until I scrolled down further and saw your post. Persons in gas guzzlers hurling verbal epithets at passing smokers, what is this world coming to?? ;)
