New smkoing ban

says in the globe and mail that they are not banning it, that the medical assoc. wants them to but they are not.

I don't have a problem with the fact that someone should not smoke with children in the car...........BUT, I do have a problem with the government getting into every aspect of our lives. How about not being able to smoke in your own home if there are children there? How about, you are not allowed to have any snacks (chips, cookies) etc. in your house if your child or yourself is anymore than 5 pounds overweight, look at the data for death and illness caused by obesity. Where does it stop?????

Go ahead, flame away at me.....

I am not a smoker, as a matter of fact I am very allergic to it. I still don't want the government being able to tell me what I can or can't do in the privacy of my own home/car because I have children. I wish people wouldn't, I think it is awful, but don't want the government ruling on it.

Totally agree in most cases but, someone has to speak up for kids. No matter how much education you give some people on the dangers associated with second hand smoke, you still see them driving around with the windows up hot boxing their little ones...a few ignorant parents end up forcing the hand of government. BUT where to draw the line????

My Uncle has pretty bad asthma because his parents smoked around him all the time as a child. If he complained they just yelled at him or he got a beating. Kids need someone else to stand up for them. While I don't want the government to tell me what I can do to my body, I respect that they want to protect children from irresponsible parents, like those who abuse them and now those who smoke around them.

OMG I was having a drink of my juice and almost spit it all over the keyboard when I seen this icon. That is too funny. Nothing like sheading some light on the subject.

I think this is going too far. I am not a smoker - never have been - and even before the smoking ban in restaurants I prefered to go to restaurants which did not allow smoking, so I don't like being around smoking or having my kids around smoking.
However, I don't like the idea of the government telling anyone what they can do in their private vehicle. We went through this in our area with our Long-Term care homes when the seniors there were told they could not smoke because of the new law - since it would be too expensive to put in the smoking rooms to meet the new standard. In that case the Long Term care homes are their HOMES yet they are told they can't smoke there. I think the government is interfering too much in what we do in the privacy of our homes or our cars - didn't Trudeau say the government has no business in the bedroom... well do they have any business in the cars or homes of folks either? ;)
I just feel this is step of government interference we don't need.
Deb - dreading the day they ban eating chocolate in the car!

Can eating a chocolate bar kill someone else? I think too many people try to compare something that can harm the person who does it with something like smoking, which harms everyone in the vicinity.

Do you have to be so serious, I think Calena was trying to put a little humour into the topic.

Thanks Siobhan - maybe us Ottawa Valley folks look at things a bit differently! There had been a previous post making the reference to the fear of the government stepping in if we are 5 lbs overweight or feeding our children junk, so I was alluding to that. I think we all know eating too much chocolate is not good for us, or our kids if we feed them too much chocolate, or chips, or fast food, or .... !
Deb - who does not smoke, but does eat chocolate!
