New Ship

My vote is for "hot" choices like Southern Carribbean, Mexico, Bermuda. But some members of my family would probably want to see Alaska........

I'd love a ship in the Med - Disney would have to work on their pricing though...judging by the prices they were touting when they toyed with the idea before, I think they would price themselves out of the market - too steep, even by their standards...especially for the American market who would have to factor in flights.

I think it's more likely that it'll be a West coast ship around LA.

That said...I've heard these rumors too many times before to get excited about it until I see something more concrete...in the meantime I will just be cautiously hopeful

I think they meant they would have to dock in one non U.S. city.

The Magic and Wonder although embark and disembark in Port Canaveral, they do dock in one non U.S. port on their journey.

I remember something about a musty old maritime law that says that if you sail from an American port and return to an american port you have to visit a FORIEGN port in between??? or something like that. It is from the days when SHIPPING was actually done on SHIPS and not Fed-Ex
I know there are a few experts out there that can clarify my answer better. My maritime laws book seems to have been misplaced

The only ships that can travel in the US without going to an international port are US flagged ships. Currently there are none. NCL is introducing the Pride of America which will sail 7 day Hawaii cruises with no international ports (A huge improvement over the old itinereary that had you going to Fanning Island for 4 days). Disney registers its ships in the Bahamas, because it is financially good for them to do so. Their workers are NOT subject to OSHA, or Minimum Wage, etc.

Disney has 2 valuable assets that other cruise lines dont - A beautiful terminal and Castaway Cay. They will need to create items like this if they cruise from anywhere other than Port Canaveral.

I could see Disney having all three ships having their home port in Port Canaveral, and then occasionally sending a ship elsewhere, sorta like Princess Does.

Either way, it means more expensive cruises on the new ship, but probably less expensive cruises on the Magic and Wonder.

Disney Dream
Disney Experience
Disney Shock (What you go through when you adjust to the prices at Disney)

The other ports of call on the survey are already visited by Disney. Caribbean, Mexico, the Bahamas and I think that's it...not sure though, sorry.


It occured to me that Disney is really associated with warm weather. I wonder if Disney would do well in a market that definalty not known for it sunburns, like Alaska. hmmmm...

If not Alaska, and not out of Port Canaveral, then where?

Does anyone know the west coast? I know nothing about it. Is there a port where cruises sail from and where do they go?

I would expect that, for now, at least the Med. is out. I say this based on "the international security climate".
A Dis ship that close to the Middle East would make too tempting a target as an American Icon.

Given the demographics (i.e. two ships on east coast, none on west coast), that points to a west coast ship.

With the popularity of Alaska, I'd bet my money there, 2:1.

Consensus here seems to be Alaska for the new ship.

The Alaska season is May - September.

Some lines deploy their ships in Alaska in the summer and Mexico (out of LA or San Diego) in the winter. Others re-position them to the Caribbean for the winter. It would depend on whether the ship can fit through the Panama Canal, which both the Wonder and Magic do. Rumor has it that a new DCL ship would be "Panamax" compliant, but have at least one additional passenger deck.

Conventional wisdom is that DCL would put a ship in southern California, for the Disneyland tie-in, but I would think that they could fill a third ship in the Caribbean as well.

The ship should be docked on the West Coast, the East Coast already has two ships. They could do a 7 nt Mexican Rivera cruise. Then Disney needs to buy Alcatraz Island and turn the old prison into a Villians Castle and call it Convict Cay. But seriously.....if DCL does build a 3rd ship it had better be on the West Coast or they may have a riot on their hands. I would love to be on a Disney Cruise and not have to be on an airplane all day to get there. 2 1/2 hrs from Seattle....ya I can do that. And since Disneyland is the original park call the ship Miss Lillian.
