New Ship For Dcl

Knowing disney I am suire they good make some good modifications to make it somewhat better for alaska. I am just telling what Tom, DCL President told me. Also like the last poster said its probably not going to be 30 out and snowing. People were swimming on the radience in the outdoor pool when it was 65 in alaska.

I am personally friends with the old DCL President Karl and the new one Tom McAlpin. He told me all the ships details have been preliminary designed. He said the euro rate is the biggest problem. I am told it will be slightly bigger then the magic, still be panamax. Also he told me it will probably sail magic's current route and magic will to somewere else. He said california is possible if all goes well this summer. But said dont expect a new ship until at least late 2007 or early 2008. He did tell the plan is to build two identical ships delivered a year apart. But he said no contract has been formally signed. But it will happen its just when. Hope that helps. Thats info from about as high as you can go in DCL

Matt:)

Thats who I talked to to get my info. Tom McAplin was telling us this stuff when we met him on an excursion. Also we sat next to him at dinner.

People swim in the outdoor pool when it's 65 because it's heated ... and it's not totally unprotected (not on what would be the equivalent of DCL's deck 9) :)

I checked out the "average" temperatures for Alaska for the so-called cruising season (May to Sept) ... highs range from 55 to 65 on average (with the occasionally 70 degree "heat wave") and lows range from 40 to 50 (so probably can have the occasionally drop below freezing too) ... that's typically cold enough to make the exteriors on the Magic/Wonder fairly useless for most guests.

Also, I don't know about the ships' hull construction ... most ships built to traverse the Inland Passage (or any part of Alaska) have reinforced hulls (even a small chunk of ice hitting the ship could cause serious damage) ... I think ultimately it would be cheaper for DCL to just build a ship from scratch that can withstand the Alaskan climate, than build a new ship for the Caribbean and pay even more to then try to retrofit an existing ship for Alaska.

Tom's reasoning is the magic will be a new ship sailing out west either way. But he said people always sailing 7 night out of canaveral are going to start wanting a new expearience, he said that can be done by putting one of the new ships there. I do understand were he coming from.

thats pretty much what he told my family on the past 10 day cruise. BTW, i see you are going on the 10-day in '06. <--to Donalds_best_pal. sorry for getting off topic. I am terrible for doing that kind of stuff.

Both said they will for sure help me in getting job in the field i want! sorry to for getting off topic. lol

Matt

how did you get to be friends with them. I mean Tom is really nice. He took us up onto to the bridge when we were leaving castaway cay on this past cruise. it was sweet. I got to ring the "mickey whisle". That was hot.

I pressed the horn with you. lol. I am matt. My dad and I were on there. Stayed at beach club afterwards. How was your trip? It was nice meeting you. I met Tom through Karl Holz who was the former DCL President but is now in charge of euro disney. Met Karl Holz years ago by calling to give him feedback. Me and him have stayed in touch all the time. I just started talking to Tom after I was introduced to him over the summer. I never knew it was you who I was talking to. lol

Matt

This is so cool. I had no idea it was you either. wow. its amazing the wonders of the Dis boards. lol.

If I knew how to post photos on this board I'd post photos of our 2002 Alaska cruise on HAL's Amsterdam. Especially the photo of us in the outdoor, uncovered, heated pool, with the Hubbard Glacier in the background. The also have a bigger pool under a retractable roof.
It was awesome.
Actually I wouldn't post them, because I don't think you want to see me, a 47 year old 250 pound man in a swimsuit :cool1:

aww, don't be so critical of yourself. This is supposed to be a happy place. lol. :D :Pinkbounc
