New security at Castaway Cay

We were on CC Wed. and the guy barely looked at our KTTW card and never asked for photo ID. We always carry photo ID but were never told it was required. I was told that they are locals not "official crew" CM.

I still think it is a useless experience. The security getting on the ship is super and always has been; a couple of bored civil servants pretending to add to island security is, well, hokey.

I believe it's a valuable experience, and any additional security to keep my family and I safe is greatly welcomed.

Agreed, if it is real, not an illusion. If they had a real security checkpoint, you might consider it added to security (I don't think duplicate screening at this level adds anything though others reasonably might think so), but as it exists now.....pretend screening can give a false sense of security which is not good.

Extremely happy they are adding the extra security. Just another layer of safety added, ALWAYS welcomed in my book!

They didn't check us this past Friday, other than to ask to see our KTTW card. I had ID with me, since it stays in the same DCL wallet as my KTTW when I'm off-ship, but they didn't bother to ask for it.

If I could stay on the island I would love that job!!! Heck give me a place to sleep I'll do it for free. :thumbsup2 :beach::beach:

So really what is this accomplishing other than wasting our time, like much of the airport security? The only extra people on the island are staff, and it's not like you can buy a weapon on the island? If this were Nassua I would understand, but CC, don't get it at all. The added tax there bites now too.

The island is easily reachable from populated neighboring islands by boat. Native Bahamians come to the island every day there is a ship there. It would be easy enough to get contraband onto CC if a person wanted to.

Security... does not equal four guys that now have a job... but if that makes you feel better... go with that.

Only you are responsible for your own security and well being. (READ the cruise contract if you don't believe me.)

I have never felt in need additional "security". In fact each time it rears its ugly head I feel more restricted and less secure.

Never increasing my security but, in the end, always lightening my wallet!

That is what the xray machines are for going on the ship. No xrays at the id check = security theatre, there for show only. If someone tries to get on the ship with contraband, that id check isn't stopping them.

Like with anything in life no matter how much security you have there are always ways around it. Now if CC had a crime problem, or people were leaving contraband on the island, or worse weapons, sure then ramp it up. But if that were the case the way they are doing it would not be the right way, more like armed shore patrols to keep intruders off the more remote parts of the island to keep the contraband from ever arriving. Also search all of the boats with workers that come from the islands before they step ashore. There you go and you have heightened security invisible to those cruising.

Now that's an idea! Save the taxpayers money by doing it for free, work a couple of hours a day at a no-brainer useless job, and live on a Caribbean island! I'll do it for room and board this summer!

I have a pretty good background in maritime security and I fully admit I don't come near to knowing it all. So frankly folks no one here has full knowledge of how and why the seciurty is set up the way it is and what else is going on behind the scenes.

Considering the number of small boats running around the islands and just as OKW Lover and others have pointed out it is very easy to get on the islands. I have no problem with showing Id an extra time because it means that someone who knows seciurty sees a need for it and therefore means more safely for me family.

AKK.

Probably meant to keep unauthorized people from getting close to the ship (i.e. make the entire dock a restricted area). Would prefer to not have to wait in line twice, so hopefully they dedicate a sufficient # of CMs to this function, but otherwise the impact sounds fairly minimal.

didn't someone find a brick of cocaine on the island last year? there was something about drugs found. i wonder if this is because the government now sees the hole in the carpet and they are trying to plug it. i know, i know, its not great security how its being done but they could ramp it up later.
just a thought…...

Good post, nice observations...until your last sentence. I disagree that " it means that someone who knows security sees a need" - I think it means another Bahamian government program that has nothing to do with security. I also disagree that the checkpoint as currently implemented means a smidgen of more safely [sic] for your family. Disney security is excellent. This new checkpoint seems to be almost a joke.

If there were some demonstrated security need not satisfied by the excellent Disney security, I hope you wouldn't even consider that what they have done is of any use at all. It's just silly. When we went through they were very bored and I'm not sure even looked at the card I pulled out to show them. If they were providing security for my company they'd be fired. And the Disney security checkpoint would be hired.

Well to each their own opinion and I respect yours, in fact I usually agree with your posts. I do know there are a lot of things that go on behind the scenes, with ships and airports and public transportation in general. Maybe I am just giving the Government more credit that their is reasons for the gate! I do know a lot of Bahamian training comes out of England.
