Hi All,
Since shoulder surgery 6 weeks ago I haven't been able to run. For the last 2 1/2 weeks the Docs have allowed me to use a recumbent bike and walk on the treadmill.

Well, I always knew it would be tough to walk a half or full marathon, just by the amount of time you need to spend on the course. I think running (jogging) a marathon is easier than walking one. But since using the treadmill I really respect the pace requirements for walking. Try as I might, I can barely get to a 14 min mile and that's just for a few minutes. I can get kind of comfortable around 15 min mile pace but heck, that is only for 3 or 4 miles. How do you keep it up for 13 or 26?

My hats off to all the walkers than can keep that pace. Not sure if I could.

Keep Walking!
Duane

Thanks Duane: Walkers are a different breed and it is something you kinda have to "Learn" whereas most joggers/runners just do it without much thought to it. Getting faster does require learning a good technique and of course endurance plays into being that you are out on the course somewhat longer that the runners.
Thanks again for the respect that walkers so dearly look for!

Duane - good luck with your recovery! You are right, I think that walking is tougher than running, so kudos to all of you walkers!!!

Duane

I have been thinking the same thing these past 2 weeks. As I rehab my calf I'm biking, lifting, and walking. Like you I use the treadmill, so I can precisely control my speed, fast enough to work the muscle, but not too fast.

When I'm walking faster than 14 mpm I feel like a cartoon character, scurrying to keep up with the treadmill. This demands a lot more of my body than running 10 mpm, and after I did 5K in 42 minutes on Wednesday everything but my sore calf hurt.

Since I hope to one day be the US Ambassador to France, I'll phrase it differently.

"I have always admired our walking colleagues, and now after literally walking several miles in their shoes, I admire them even more."

Panda, does that make you love me too?

Today is my first true walk/jog day since the injury. I cannot wait to be running full time, it's a lot easier on my body and my mind!

Get better Duane.

Best
Craig

Duane, I'm glad to hear that your recovery is "moving along." Best WISHes for a speedy recovery and that you are back to your usual self or better soon.

Craig, ditto. Hope all is getting back to normal.

Thanks for the insight.

I'm feelin' the love. --and respect for each other.

Of course I love you Craig, I wish we could get more of your insight on leading an athletic lifestyle.

Happy Panda:hippie:

Thanks Duane!

I always get the "oh, you only walk" attitude from people when I tell them about my races.
I wish I could run - training would be easier since it would take up alot less time!

Take care of that shoulder, Duane!

I thought I would take it 'easy' one day and decided to walk 4 miles. Well, by miles two, my glute muscles were burning so bad I couldn't stand it! And trying to maintain a 'simple' 15 min miles was impossible. My quads and glute muscles were so sore the next day, I felt that I had run 10 miles. I totally respect the walkers in our little group. I know for certain that I couldn't walk and 1/2 marathon let alone a full marathon.

:worship: :worship: :worship: to all of our walkers.

Beth

Thank you!! You guys are the best!! I am slowly relearning my walking skills since my surgery.

Duane: take care of that shoulder!!

Calico: don't overdo and reinjure your calf!!

Erica...feeling the love:love:

Another walker here feeling the love.

Thanks Duane - take care of that shoulder.

Thanks Craig - and don't try to get going too fast on the calf and reinjure it.

Oh totally! I'm always telling everyone that it's easier for me to run slowly than to walk fast! My mom and I are doing the half this January. When we signed up, she went with that beginner's line that I've used too-- "well, I can always walk it." Made me laugh! I know she didn't mean any disrespect to walkers, she just hasn't tried walking that fast for very long! We are trying to work up to a slow run or walk/run plan mainly because I know I can't possibly walk fast enough... yeah, I can finish a Goofy but I'm scared to death of walking a half!;)

I am REALLY feelin' the love over here! :cloud9:   Whooo hooo! Thanks Duane! Nice start to my Monday. :thumbsup2

When I began my group training for a half marathon, I went with the run/walk group first. I couldn't keep up. So the second night, I went with the walking group. My legs hurt worse from walking than running! I'm back with the run/walk group now and just do what I can.

Three cheers for the walkers! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Feelin the Love!!

Once you get the hang of walking faster (it does take different muscles), it is great. Also good for those knees, no pounding.

GO WALKERS!!

I would love to learn how to walk faster. I have to do a little running just to keep up. My husband, strictly a walker, is about 5-10 minutes faster than I am.

Walkers are amazing!!!
