New Resort Room Decor

Being long time travelers to the World we always appreciated the Disney touches that made the resort rooms different and special. While we understand and appreciate the turn to clean and sanitary, I wonder if anyone else shares the little naggy feeling I have that the rooms look cheap and cold? I’ve seen Pop, Copper Creek and Port Orleans as examples. I travel for my work, am not monetarily allowed to stay in anything but mid-priced lodging, and see some clean, bright rooms with personality that do not cost $400 a night. And, yes, I realize those places do not offer a Castle! Could Disney have done better? Or did they do great? Thoughts? Discussion?

I agree, some of the room themes once it's been updated seem to be a bit to sterile for me too.

I don’t necessarily think they look cheap, but I can see why some might describe them as cold. I just came back from an 11 night stay in a new Pop room. In photos it looked a little sterile, but in person the walls are a taupe shade, not white, the bathroom area is a lovely robins egg blue, and the wood tones are very warm. Between the Mickey art over the main bed, and Pluto sleeping in the Murphy, it felt like there was plenty of Disney feel to the room. I liked the room much more in person than I did just from the photos.

My main reason to stay on property is for the themed rooms, so each time they de-theme a resort, it becomes less appealing to me, and loses its edge over the more affordable offsite hotels.

Many of the updated rooms look nice, but I wish they had more options with intense themes. We would gladly pay extra for over the top Mickey decor. That is why we go to Disney! I understand that others prefer the more relaxed non-IP decor but I wish they had more options. We have stayed at AoA and the POR Royal guest rooms. The Pirate rooms at CBR are not our preference. That leaves... a lot of rooms that look like a bunch of other hotels. While I appreciated the theme at Boardwalk and AKL, the hidden Mickey's made it more magical for us.

I'm a convert. When I first saw that rooms no longer had the themed duvets or bed runners, I thought it looked terrible. And when I first saw photos of the renovated rooms at CSR, I thought they were bland.

But I stayed in a renovated room at Yacht Club, and a renovated room at Pop. I love the new design and subtle decor.

I often said I understood why they want to move to only white bedding, but that frankly looks horrible in (most) themed rooms that used to have colorful bedspreads. (I think AKL, for instance, works well with all-white beds out of the box.) But in the newly updated rooms, the white beds fit in perfectly. So in the future, as they continue to update rooms with white beds and toned down designs, I expect it will continue to be tasteful and appealing.

I still think rooms like the Royal Guest rooms were beautifully themed and not "garish," bedspread and all. But I am such a fan of these new rooms!

I do wonder what will happen to some of the rooms, like AoA or the Royal Guest rooms. I hope they keep the designs there; they're lovely. In places like ASMo, Pop, YC, I think the subtler theme that is more keyed in to colors, form, and artwork, works really well.

I don’t need or want over the top theming, but I do miss the small touches, like The differently themed Mickey Lamps. Small Mickey heads woven into sheers and shower curtains etc. I hate the plain white bedding, and preferred the runners & throw pillows.
I thought the rooms in POR were fine. They refurbished before the “stark” trend.

I love all the new room designs. They're on trend and look sleek/toned down on clutter and tacky decor that dated a lot of the rooms. They overall seem cleaner and easier to manage for housekeeping, too.

Yes, I dislike Disney's recent trend of making resort rooms look generic.

like @earfulofmagic I saw pictures of the new rooms and didn't like them at all. I felt they were stark and cold.
Then I stayed in a new BCV and I Love It!!! It is such an improvement, well done and tasteful.

As PPs posted, they typically look way better in person than in pictures, especially Pop and YC. I was on the fence about those rooms from pictures, but when you walk in, wow! They both fit in with the themes of the resorts perfectly. I do think the beds looked better with a runner, but honestly they just get thrown folded up somewhere and not seen the rest of the trip so not a big loss. I am slightly disappointed with the new rooms at CSR. They're a little too modern for my taste and I don't really see how they fit in with the resort theme at all.

I actually like the new, no fuss, look of the rooms. They look clean and modern. I agree there could be just a tad more of a Disney touch, but I think most of the new rooms I have seen are a huge improvement in my opinion.

I don't mind if the rooms don't have super obvious theming but I think the new rooms at Pop Century are absolutely awful. I'm a nurse and every time I see pictures of the new rooms I think I am looking at pictures of a Labor and Delivery room in a hospital.

I stayed in a renovated room at CSR this summer and it was wonderful. I liked the pretty bed runners that the rooms used to have, but I glad so glad the ugly bedspreads are a thing of the past!

They look okay but I wish they did just a little more in terms of theming or making it look more welcoming. I know its not the most sanitary but I think if they still had a runner and a carpet I would love the rooms. Like some people are saying, maybe it will look better in person but I'm kind of sad about Pop and Coronado.

Theming is expensive. Generic is much less so.

I will reserve judgement until I see them in person, but like disneyvoice said, in photos, many of them look more like hospital rooms than hotel rooms.

I agree! Dislike the renovations.
