I just checked out canon's site and say a new rebel.

The rebel xti.
10.1 megapixels
2.5 inch screen
self cleaning sensor

If only I needed a new camera

Cleaning sensor would be nice since we can not take the cleaning fluid on any plane.
from 8 MP to 10MP... I could take it or leave it. The current 8 will print pretty large.

Can I just trade my old one?

I tell you what, I am feeling generous today. I will buy your old XT for $100 that way you only have to pay $699

But serouisly, there is always the option of selling it either locally or on an auction site. That makes the upgrade a little easier on the $$$.

The 400d is nice, but on a practical basis, it really isn't going to give me anything I can't get with my 350d. My hard drive is already unhappy with 8mb RAW. It would go on strike with 10mb!! Besides, I want to know how well the sensor cleaning works before I took the bait. Also, I only use the screen to verify proper framing and check any egregious exposure errors. Otherwise, I don't really use it. I'll be happy for a couple of more years with my plain little 'ol XT!
