New rebate cheque?

My DD got $100 cheque today in the mail with a letter explaining how it all works. Families get $1000 and individuals get $300. Pretty much the same as what was previously stated.

Not to rain on the parade but your wallets are going to be hit with an extra 8% starting July 1st on heating/cooling your home, gassing your car, subscriptions, memberships and many of the other goods and services not presently taxed by the PST. This is not "free" money, just a temporary bribe, er, gift, to offset the initial impact of this tax grab.

In one hand, out the other.

Dalton McGuinty---Worst Ontario Premier ever.

Actually, it's a transition cheque. To offset the little bit extra everyone will pay until next year, when the permanent reductions on personal income tax will be realized when people do their taxes next year.

It's a whole tax change, and is much more than switching to a one tax system in Ontario. It will create and sustain jobs in Ontario, as businesses will get all the PST back that they pay to do their businesses. Think of how much $$ that is for an auto plant. Or a paper mill.

You are already paying layers of PST in everything you buy - On a car - The manufacturer pays PST on the glass, the steel, the rubber, the upholstery, the electrical components, etc. The car dealership pays pst on top of all that when it's bought from the manufacturer. Then you're charged PST on top of that. This is on everything in Ontario!

All those layers will be gone. One PST when it's shipped out the door - to you. The cost to produce that car will be less, and that will be passed on to the customer as companies compete for business.

Small businesses are having their taxes cut as well.

Everyone automatically thinks "tax grab", but in actuality it's less taxes coming to gov't. It's not a popular choice and it needed to be done - if you check the history of the NDP and PC, they both wanted to do it too. At least Dalton had the guts to do it because he knew what needed to be done, and he's not making a choice just for his own political gain. Now the other parties are having a media hayday - this is perfect for them!!

If the big poverty activist groups are saying the gov't needed to do this, if the economists are saying it, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and so many more, then I think this will be good for Ontario in the long run. I want my kids to have jobs here!

K - Rant Over .... LOL

Wow right out of Premier Dad's playbook. Hook, line and sinker..........

If you think it will save us money on products can you please share those rose colored glasses.

It's advertised to save businesses money & when my husband's boss & accountant crunched the #'s he said it's actually going to cost him more now.

:thumbsup2

If and that's a huge if, we do by some miracle end up saving on some things it doesn't balance with the fact that we will be paying an outright 8% more for essentials like utilities and gas.

Yes, it's paying tax on the utilities etc that hurts, especially at first(more the thought of it than anything)...but then there were some things we were actually paying less for (right now we're paying 5% less on restaurant meals, clothing, cars, etc than before as we were at 18% prov tax...ugh).
I didn't actually sit and crunch numbers and do a bunch of comparisons at the time, but I thought it would cost a lot more but I don't think it did in the long run.

I'm not sure what you currently pay for sales tax, etc or what is taxable there right now, but we were most certainly at the higher end down here so to go from 18% to 15% to our current 13% was nice for the day-to-day things....

My DD got her $100.00 cheque on Monday. I got a cheque for $330.00. The "family" payment was sent to me in my name only. It went right into the vacation account.

We have been waiting and waiting, then I went to check my other bank's bank account that I only have for child tax to go in and there it was. I don't know how long, but it was a surprize at the perfect time. Ikea for night stands and DH is getting a new BBQ for Fathers Day.

Ours is going right into the Disney Dream Cruise for Feb 2011 account. :goodvibes

I am not happy about paying extra taxes on my utilities ... gas, hydro and water have already skyrocketed in the past few years. But I'll see how my current budgeting works for the upcoming increases. It's so frustrating how wages don't increase much, or at all as in my DH's case, but the cost of everything else keeps going up and up.

Come on Loto Max ! :rotfl:

Got our notification that we are getting a cheque yesterday. Better than a kick in the pants, I guess! Oh yeah, taxes are up--we've already had a kick in the pants.

Ok. Just because it's bursting to come out of me.... I have to say it! Why do I get 1/3 of a married couple, simply because I'm single? If you look at the numbers, a single person who makes under $80k gets $300, a married couple who makes under $160k (regardless of if they have children or not) receive $1000.

Make that math add up please. I don't disagree that married families WITH dependent children should be entitled to more, but just because you're married you get an extra $700?

I've gotten it out. Maybe I can get past it now and be a little less bitter bitter towards all my married sans children friends :)

While I don't disagree, the married couple *only* gets $400 more. If they were paid at the same rate as a single person, they'd each get $300 or $600 total.

:confused3okay, I don't get it.... we are both retired.
my DH (common-law) hasn't got a cheque and I got one for $100.:confused3

Did you file your tax returns as common-law? It sounds like CRA doesn't know you are common-law, maybe you should give them a call & see how to straighten out your marital status.
