New Reality TV show...Airline (on A&E)

It's actually MDW, not ORD (same city, different airport :D ).
We were there when they were filming it, and we saw a segment that I suspect will make it on the air. The gate agents were trying to get someone to give up their seat for a man who was trying to get home for Christmas. The cameras were there, and they made a really big production out of the incident...you could just tell they were setting it up for the show. Should be fun to watch...thanks for posting, as I didn't know when it would be airing.

I taped it last night to watch today. I did catch a few minutes of it here and there and from what I saw I thought it was pretty good. I'm a SWA fanatic though!! Did anyone else see it last night?

...but I almost hated to laugh at other people's travel foibles & woes. I couldn't help myself though!!

First, the drunks. Who knew there were so many? There was one guy who was trying to cajole his way onto the flt by cussing at the gate agent. Yeah, that works.

Then there was the service dog that pooped in the jetway. Ugh.

The mom & dad who had to prove that their child was under 2 (word to the wise on this one...) and when they called the hospital, they had no record of his birth. My favorite part here was that the woman remembered which labor room she had been in! Good lord, I had so many drugs in me, I could have been in our car.

Last, but not least, the "queer as I wanna be" flight attendant. He was hilarious! (Although I will say that the one thing I hate about SW is that some of the FA's just won't shut up --I want to work or sleep on a plane, not play party games). These guys sure seem to have fun at work.

I am sure it will be repeated a zillion times. Catch it if you can. It will certainly dispel any thought that travel is a glamorous business!

Ohh sorry, a friend of ours who works for Delta told me ORD. I should have double-checked.

DH is an airport police officer so we have been looking forward to this. We taped it and will watch it tonight.

IMHO as in any "reality show", they seem to try to jazz up the scene to make it more edgy to the viewers. The part with the family that had to pay for their 18 month son because the supervisor said they didn't have the proper documents to prove his age. I took one look at the kid and I could tell he wasn't 2 yet. I think the woman was being a b**ch because she was on camera and didn't want to give the people a break because if she did, she might get in trouble since it was being filmed. Everyone knew they were on camera and they all played to it.

Reality indeed.

You know, I looked at the discussion about this on Flyertalk, where there are a LOT of postings about the subject. It's interesting that the opinions of the posters about the *obvious* age of the child are about 50/50, in terms of believing that said child appeared to be over 2 yrs. old. I've got 2 nephews the same age (11 mos.), one of them weighs 28 lbs., is walking, and stands nearly 3 ft. tall, the other weighs 16 lbs. and is barely crawling. The first child's parents routinely encounter people who are surprised to find that he does not speak, because those people are assuming that he is well over 2 yrs. old. Appearances pretty much mean nothing.

I didn't see the show (I just have broadcast TV) but SWA (and every other airline I've ever dealt with) makes no secret of the fact that a passenger attempting to fly a child as a free lap baby may be asked for proof of the child's age. It is better PR to just ask all the time; regardless of how old the child might appear to be. IME, domestic airlines will ask for proof unless the baby is obviously too young to sit up without help, and any lap baby who can walk will always be 'carded.'

Believe me, there are a LOT of people who will lie about the age of a 2-3 yo to try to avoid paying airfare for that child. Airlines who let passengers get away with lap-carrying a child that age are violating FAA safety regulations. You had better believe that on a televised program they are going to ask.

I really enjoyed the shows. Thanks for the reminder Miss Jasmine! In the segment where they featured the three F/As on the plane going to Vegas. Is every SWA that, how shall I put it, wild? I can see how it could be fun, but could get on your nerves after a while if you wanted to sleep or work.. Just curious, I have not flown on SWA yet.

sgtdisney, no not all SWA flights are like that one. For our first flight they cracked some jokes before take-off but that's about it. Our second flight there wasn't any jokes, carrying-on, etc. I do like the overall 'atmosphere' SWA is known for but I haven't encountered any strong doses like what was shown on the program.

I'm still trying to get over how rude some people can be. Looks like next week's episode will be good!

I fly SWA rather often, and I've never encountered major hijinks on the part of the FA's. I think they must have been hamming for the camera, with the thought that a midday crowd headed for Las Vegas probably wouldn't mind.

SWA's "welcome aboard" announcements and the safety spiel do tend to contain a bit of hokey humour; they do it to get your attention. Other than that, the only sort of "entertainment" I've ever had to sit through was an impromptu SWA trivia competition they did to relieve tension while we sat on a runway for awhile waiting to be de-iced. I think that lasted 10 minutes or so, and they gave out extra free drink coupons to people who got the answers right.

I've never flown SWA, so I have no idea. I am a Delta girl myself. As for whether passengers and agents really act like that, yes they do. I don't think there really is much playing up going on.

I felt bad for the one guy who had his car stolen, his reservations lost, etc. I have been there.

I watched both episodes Monday night and enjoyed them. I felt they played to the cameras too. But I am sure that there are things the camera never will catch that are even worse than we will see!
I got DH two books written by airline FA's, I have read them and they are great reading..........
" Plane Insanity" by Elliott Hester
and "The Plane Truth" by A. Frank Steward

I actually thought the overweight guy who had all the bad things happen to him was very calm. First, he had his car stolen, then they couldn't find his reservation, then he had to buy an extra ticket because of his weight, then he was standby and didn't get on the flight. He never really lost his cool the way I would have.

And the woman with the baby was stupid. I have been to Disney World 5 times since my son was born and once with a foster baby. I always called and made sure I had proper documentation with me, including birth certificates. They should have charged her for being stupid.

I, for one, don't like SWA flight humor. I find it annoying.
