I am looking to make the call this week to get my purchase going. When do I get points and how will I be assigned a use year? For example, if I purchase 200pts today, do I get 200pts for 2007 and another 200 pts in January 2008?

I assume you are purchasing directly from Disney.

You will be able to make reservations as soon as Disney receives your deposit and gets you into the system. If you are purchasing AKV, you mayhave to wait - depends if the unit you are purchasing an interest in is ready for occupancy or not. Ask your guide about this if you are getting AKV. SSR (and the other DVC resorts) is completely ready for occupancy so that won't apply if you buy SSR (or another DVC resort).

I do not know what use year you will receive. If you don't request a particular one, one will be assigned to you. Ask your guide which it will be. Depending on which resort you purchase, you may not have much of a choice if you are in a hurry to get the points.

If you purchase a December use year (there are no January, May, July or November use years), you will get 2006 use year points, which you will be allowed to bank if you can't use them before 11/30/2007). Then you will get another allotment on 12/1/2007 and the next on 12/1/2008, etc. This is a very good deal if December will work for you - you get the extra year's points and you will not pay annual maintenance fees for them. The 2007 fees will be prorated from the time you sign the purchase agreement. You pay full fees beginning in 2008.

If you get any other use year, you will get 2007 use year points. Then you will get another allotment in 2008, on the first of the use year month. For example, if you buy an August use year, you get 2007 use year points and your 2008 allotment comes on August 1, 2008

This is true, when I bought my first points it was August, but I think I waived the right to that years points in order to get their deal at the time - think it was $10 a point discount. But when I bought SSR - it was December and I asked for an August use year. I also asked for and got that August's points, but I don't remember exactly how it worked and whether I paid a different amount to what I'd have paid if I hadn't got them.

That seems like a great reason if purchasing today to request a Dec. UY. Are there any disadvantages to December?

Hi Sue - I think use year really depends on when you like to go. There are many more people on here who are far more organised than me when it comes to DVC who will be able to explain better. But here's one thing to consider with use year. Mine is August, so I have to bank unused points by the end of January.

This means, if I want to use my points to go between 1st February and end of July, I need to decide by the end of January, which is not always convenient.

So, if you had a December use year, I'm guessing you'd have to bank your points by the the end of May. If you sometimes like to vacation between June and the end of November, but don't plan that well ahead, it would make it difficult. If you'd already banked your points, you'd need to borrow from the following year, and that mixes things up a little.

Hope this helps. Others will be able to give more advice, but I think basically DVC doesn't work out as well for us who don't really plan a long way ahead, or need to change their travel plans often.

I'm a long-term planning type so I usually know when I'm going away months and months in advance. I think the DVC will be perfect for me for that reason. But thank you for helping explain the logic behind preferences in UY! I'm hoping to make a first purchase this week and want to be as prepared as I can be. Thanks!
