New puppy- which food?

I would put Chloe on her back with a firm, "NO". I would hold her there until she stopped wiggling and then I'd let her up.

I wanted to let her know early one who was boss. I would also praise Chloe when she played nice.

I had to laugh when I realized what your screen name was! No, we are not there yet! Not when it comes to puppy! I tried the back roll this morning for a severe pulling bought and it worked! Hurrah! That combined with txgirls ehhhh ehhhh and I think we've got a plan. I read Puppies for Dummies and assorted other books and got mostly "ignore it" advice. Yeah, that's not working.... I'll have to find out when the dog whisperer is on - but I'll keep my husband away from it for a bit. ;) After Charlie and the Chocolate Factory I was ready to stuff a doggy treat in his mouth if he said "Your mumbling is really starting to bum me out" one more time! He's ready for some new material! :rotfl:

AMITHEREYET, I would be curious to hear details of the green bean diet. Our dogs are overwieght and I have been trying to get some weight off them. They eat diet dog food but its not working so well. One has arthritis so I have to be careful of how long she walks/plays ball.

Chloe was about 115lbs and the breed standard for a female Golden is 65lbs! Chloe is very big-boned though and taller and broader than most male Goldens that I've seen. There is no way I could get her down that much without starving her death.

I talked to a Golden breeder, who's the founder of Golden rescue in Austin, and she told me to cut her kibble in half and substitute the other half for green beans. They're a great filler and a half a can is only 20 calories.

I buy regular store-bought green beans, with no sugar/no salt and she gets a half a can of those and a half a cup of kibble twice a day. I can tell she's lost weight, but I don't know how much. I can already feel ribs now, but she still has no waist.

At first it was tough, because she does what I call "the stare" and it drives me nuts. She needs to eat earlier in the day now, but she's getting better about adjusting to the lower food intake. The first two weeks were tough.

My goal is to take at least 20lbs off of her, as this is the weight my vet in Destin said I needed to get her down to.

ETA: Here's scary statistics: It's better for a dog to be underweight than overweight. An overweight dog loses two years off of its life, for every ten pounds they're overweight. :sad2:

Good! Flipping them on their back is a great way to put them in a submissive state. It worked great for us!

When I lived in Chicago, I was a dog walker and one of the dogs that I walked was a Dobie. She was overweight and seemed hungry all of the time. They fed her twice a day (they split what she should have once a day for her diet into two feedings..........this helps her have something to eat, plus Dobies are prone to bloat as many large, deep chested breeds are and this helps lower the chances of them bloating), but in the middle of the day after her walk we always made her a big salad in her dog bowl. We put lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, and sometimes fruit in her bowl. She LOVED it, and it helped her lose weight! For those of you with overweight dogs, the vets that I've worked for always recommended that you give them fruits and veggies for a snack as opposed to dog treats. They tend to love carrots, and they're good for their teeth. This is also great for dogs that are diabetics. My dog was, and we gave her carrots for treats. I agree about overweight dogs having a shorter life span, but as they reach their senior years they tend to become VERY arthritic, since their frame can't carry all of the extra weight. It's pretty sad when they're so overweight that they can barely walk. :(
