Check out Disney's site to see that they gave extra room views for the Poly.

Yes, but it's not updated yet, unless you guys see it?

I'm guessing that Lagoon view will now be called water view and that it will include the lagoon, pools and marina. The last two used to be standard views.

Ok, I was thinking that the lagoon view was new, my bad. But since we are here, what new views do you think they will come up with?

I think just what I said above - any standard longhouse that right now you can see the pool or the marina or even just a part of the lagoon will all be lumped into a category called "water view".

Standard views will now be the monorail, parking lot or grass or something! ;)

Lagoon isn't new. It's fairly limited now.

I expect a Pool View to be added. Everyone and their dog requests Samoa right now. They're going to charge more for it.

I agree, with the Pool View being added. Some will like that, some will not. I probably won't stay at the Poly until we buy into DVC.

I think it's just the reality.

Much like the DVC point reallocation at Saratoga, where the two most-requested areas became Preferred, I think the fact that everyone asks for Niue and Samoa for pool views, and maybe less so for Fiji for the water views, suggests they'll make them bookable as such so that people aren't requesting 3rd floor Samoa and having desk tantrums when they get monorail view Aotearoa or the handful of simply dreadful back-side Tuvalu views.

It'd be nice if they'd make the King rooms bookable at Deluxes as well, although that's not a view so much as a booking category.

That's so odd you keep mentioning Niue as I asked around and was told that's not one of the more requested longhouses due to it being small, no balconies...Fiji is quite popular for the marina view! :)

I covered my bases and my first request is Niue, West facing and second is Fiji - east facing!
So I'm sure I'll get the one you mentioned - backside view of Tuvalu! I won't yell at the front desk, promise! :)

Then if they reduce the number of standard views, it's going to make it that much harder for anyone to get a reservation w/out having to pay more for the next category.

I know that's how business works, but I don't like the idea that if a lot of people request a certain view that they paid for, that Disney decides we should just charge more for that view.

In a week at the Poly last year, I saw mutiple desk tantrums.

It is reasonable to make a pool/water category. They do it elsewhere.

People will still get the view they paid for. The views will simply be defined differently.

I understand what it all means.

I still think it's a raw deal for those who used to be able to get those views when booking standard views and now can't.
I'm just starting to agree that Disney is getting ridiculous in trying to find new ways to charge people for things that they weren't charged for before. (yes, I know we paid for our rooms...but now something has been taken away)

And I'm sure you did see desk tantrums. I wouldn't know as I rarely go to the front desk.

I guess I don't see redefining view here as ridiculous, as people themselves are clearly seeing Samoa/Fiji as significantly better than Rarotonga and tuvalu.

I'm asking honestly, are you serious?

There are some standard views that are better than others, so naturally people request them. Disney sees that people request them and instead of leaving them as views for standard rates, they decide to re-categorize them so they are no longer considered standard views and can now charge more for them. Now those booking standard views who used to be able to request those views would now need to pay more. Which a lot can't. Raw deal.

There are often significantly better/more popular standard room locations at many different resorts. That's just the way it is. But I do get why they are doing this.

The problem is that many people more than expected they get the "preferred" standard view rooms, to the point where they actively abused cast members.

We do not know what the cost differential will be. Supply and demand is such that if someone cannot afford something because it is in increased demand, I guess I just don't see that as a "raw deal." it is basic economics. Sometimes price changes due to supply constraints. There is an inelastic supply of the better views; Disney can't just make more easily.

And if by reclassifying Disney can reset expectations, the end result will be more consistent guest satisfaction and fewer desk tantrums, which is better for staff (and other guests).

(I have also been of the opinion that after Poly DVC sells out, either the 2019 or 2020 point charts will feature a reallocation with 3 classifications of studio "views." The handful of Tokelau that were Lagoon View when built as resort rooms will not be SV any more, and I suspect there will be an SV, Pool/Garden and Lake View categories. There will be many tantrums when this occurs, but at least when people book SV they won't be requesting those Tokelau rooms and then having tantrums when they get the Pago Pago parking lot balcony.)

I have read your post and I understand and appreciate your point of view.

Respectfully, I disagree. In my opinion, Disney is not doing this to save cast members from complaining guests. They are doing it because they saw a way to make more money. And they have every right to do so, but I can still think it stinks.

I don't even stay at Polynesian, this is only my second time. I just don't like the idea of it. I'm sure it has happened at other resorts and I wasn't aware of it. Just like guests who book Polynesian in the future won't be aware that a few months ago they could have gotten that view of the pool for a lot less (or at least a fighting chance). Besides, who's to say that now when they book a water view and get a pool, they won't be at the desk yelling they wanted lagoon?

This is so funny, watch they don't do anything like this when it actually happens! :D

See, I think it can very well be both.

Guests are making it clear that they see some rooms as more valuable than others. By adjusting pricing to reflect that, they also manage guest expectations and make staff jobs easier. It is an easier decision for most companies to make to protect staff if there is also margin to be created. It'd be nice to think most companies care about staff when it is at least revenue neutral, or even if it's slightly negative, but... ha. However, when it's revenue positive, it's an easy pitch though management.

Right now, anyway, we're all spitballing what the change is likely to be. However, I do think some form of Pool/Water is most likely. I have never seen quite so many desk/podium tantrums as I've seen at Poly, truly. It was nuts. There is no way the GM at Poly isn't aware of the rate of desk tantrums, because even though I was there a busy week last year, I have a hard time thinking "yeah, it was just a bad week and it's abnormal." They all seemed to either be about Pago Pago or about monorail view.
