New Pirates Cruise for kids?

I don't have nut allergic kids but I have always wondered why WDW would choose Peanut Butter. It's convenience makes sense; however, I wonder if they couldn't come up with a better solution. With that being said, where do you draw the line? My oldest dd is only in Kindergarten and we've encountered folks with allergies to nuts, mayo, eggs, dairy, strawberries, bananas, soy (in which case I'm guessing soy butter is a bad idea!) gluten allergies and more! Would you cut out all of this? If so, what is left?

I, personally, have a bee allergy, which, in the summer, can be difficult to control. Can't hardly tell the bees to take a hike since I'm allergic to them! I am the one that has to leave the area!

LOL! We too have come across many kids with allergies to all kinds of things! I remember watching a kid break out in really terrible hives on a preschool trip to a grocery store a few years ago because a store employee gave a strawberry to a little boy allergic to them. The preschool teachers didn't realize another tray of fruit had been brought out. They were still checking to see if any kids were allergic to the banana samples! I thought the store employee was going to pass out, she was so upset.

Shan, the way our elementry principal described the peanut policy to the parents on kindergarten open house night was pretty clear. They don't serve it, period. You can not send it into the kindergarten classrooms. The do not ban children from bringing it in for lunch in the higher grades, but they have to wipe their hands with wet naps after lunch and the tables do get wiped down. He then went on to say that if any of us had ever seen a young child stop breathing because of eating peanut butter, we would understand their precautions. I have never heard any parents complain about this policy and my oldest is in 2nd grade at this school. I quess I thought most schools were like this. :) I can understand your being nervous to send your kids on the cruise, I would be too. I know my 3 year old can get peanut butter all over the kitchen island, herself, her hair, etc. when she eats it! While I'm sure the age 4 and up group are better with this, I'd still be nervous!

The only regret I have about the Pirate Cruise is that you can't go if you're over 10. DD went last year and would love to go again this July, but she just turned 11, so no go.

As for the peanut allergy stuff, we'll have to agree to disagree. I'm just not a big fan of forcing others to comply with something that effects a relatively small percentage of the population.

"It is sad there are some people who have these types of allergies...but in the case for those with these types of allergies they are the ones that need to find ways to adapt to the majority of the people and not the other way around. Most kids eat penautbutter"

I actually felt this way once also when I had two sons that absolutely love PB&J and they were refused to bring it to daycare cause there was a girl with severe allergy just to smell, when every birthday party my friend was scouring through the treat bag to make sure her son didn't get any due to his allergies, i thought this is ridiculous why should my kids be denied something they like because of other children......until I had my 3rd child is now SEVERE allergy to tree nuts/peanuts and some other things they can't even pin point and she is only 2. She literally swells in 3 minutes, her whites of her eyes turn red, she screams bloody murder and hives all over. I have never been so scared in all my life! This has now happened a couple of times and NOW I understand why the parents were obsessed about their child's allergies, now I respect the rules that are laid down. Would I send her on the pirate cruise when she is older probably not due to her allergy I would find something else, I just don't trust someone else to watch her like I do, especially when they don't know what they are looking for. I have already gotten two calls from her own daycare in panic when she accidentally ingested something, and had to walk them through over the phone what to do until I got there. However my sons will definitely be trying out the cruise. Unfortunately, it's sad she will have to miss out when she is older but I will make it up to her in other ways, it won't be the end of the world.
