OK, I've been debating about posting this since I returned from my trip but a bunch of us were talking about this at work today and I found that I am not alone. I'm posting here because I think it will cause the least amount of flames! Just need to vent.....

Why do some parents feel the need to give their children a running commentary about each ride while it's happening? I never realized how much this happens and how annoying it is until this trip. For example: We were on Pirates of the Caribbean and I had a dad with two kids behind me(probably around 6 or 7 yrs old). This was the dad...."Oh, look at the scary skeleton blowing in the wind......ooh, look at the big pirate ships, they are shooting at each other. Oooh, look at the pirate sleeping with the pigs....and look over there, it's Jack Sparrow....I wonder what he's doing there? Now look at the dog outside the cell...they want his key but he won't give it to them.....oooh, look it's Capt. Jack again. Where did he get all that money?" :headache: :headache:

You get the hint......the kids never made a single comment or reply to any of his commentary. I mentioned this to my friends and found out they were all annoyed too but didn't say anything. I know it's petty, but come on! Some of us like to enjoy the atmosphere of the ride without the play by play! This happened over and over(Everest, Kilimanjaro, Dinosaur, Great Movie Ride, etc.)

Am I just being too grouchy or does anyone agree? Flame away if you choose! I have heat retardent clothes! :goodvibes

You know , I have in the past given a play by play BEFORE getting on the ride so as my little ones would know what to expect . If there had been any point that made the child scared or such I would at that point say something to my kid.

A play by play through the whole thing just plain ruins it.

I agree that trying to help the kid(s) not be so scared or something may be one reason, and another may also be the excitement of the adult !!! LMFAO !

Really ! I think I may have found myself doing the same thing on a nostalgic ride that I hadn't been on in about 10 years ! LOL

But, for instance, I had not been on the Briar ride before and was on with my 6 year old daughter, and we just kindof giggled a bit to lighten the dark parts of the ride, and maybe I chippered in a bit then, but that was about it...

I dunno... but I think probably the sheer excitement of being on the ride, maybe the dude got lost in himself. :)

heehee...

Good point tho ! The things we do that we aren't even aware of ! :confused3

I never paid much attention to this, but now that you mention it, I can see it happening, and it would irritate me.

One of my biggest pet peeves is at the Haunted Mansion. I hate it when people recite the pre-recorded announcer's voice. "Is this room actually stretching..." And then when they all scream after the lights go out. Oh yeah, and there's always one straight guy who makes the stupid "did you just touch my butt" comment to another straight guy. I find that to be a bit homophobic.

Maybe it's homoerotic to them.

Perhaps the gentleman harbors a secret desire to work obtain a job as a Jungle Cruise skipper?

I'm baffled that the OP thinks he would get less flames here than on any other part of the DIS. Know'm'sayin'?

Funny...funny....funny! :rotfl: I needed that laugh today! I simply meant that my friends on this board tend to be a little more sarcastic and see the humor in situations more so than some people on the other boards. I was afraid people would get defensive and tell me I just don't "get it" because I don't have kids. But I love the comments!
Like Johnny Storm in the Fantastic Four.........FLAME ON!

I feel your pain
I got flamed big time for making some comments on another board yesterday. It was like you can't even have an opinion unless it agrees with everyone else. I became definsive and then it got worse. I even think the moderator removed my last comment, which was nothing compared to the others.

Some people are either way too sensitive, or they think they know everything and cannot be proven wrong.

I am SO embarrassed. I have done this ! hopefully -- not loud enough that any one could hear but now I'm not sure. My daughter was very timid at age 4; and the battle scene on the POC and (yes -- this is even more pitiful :sad2:) the herbivorous dinosaurs on the Universe of Energy TERRIFIED her. I don't remember if she actually said anything or not -- but she was so scared on POC, she was shaking like a leaf and we had to make a quick post-ride trip to the ladies room to compose ourselves and to make sure one (not me -- Thank you) of us hadn't lost control of our bodily functions :scared1:.

Apologies to all -- but at least the seat wasn't wet when we exited. :lmao:

Back to the topic at hand, I have to admit that your peeve doesn't bother me in the slightest if the child is young, i.e. 3,4,5 years old. I just figure the talkative parent is excited and the kid is likely a little anxious so it's a way to keep them calm. Plus, wouldn't you rather hear quiet chatter than a screaming child? Yeesh. I would!

Plus, I think it's cute listening to parents talking to tiny ones.

oh my gosh I am so guilty of this! If I weren't holding one of my kids and had to hear someone else doing a play by play I would also be annoyed :rotfl:
Oh, and we have 2 little bitty kids so imagine riding in the seat in front of us.

Ohhhhhh aaahhhhmmmmm ahhh excuse me , but thats me touching his butt. Works every time , they think there friend is joking with them and I'm copping a free feel!!!!

<G> !

Sorry.
I do that. Though I think I only mouth the words. I love the Haunted Mansion preshow!! :goodvibes

My pet peeve are people who stand in the walkway areas of the parade route and will not move! (so like, you can get through the stuff..) I keep telling myself, just go around through Fantasyland but no, I always have to risk it and try to walk by the castle to get over to Frontierland.

ugh!!

My friend does that with his child....with everything. Going to dinner with them is so exhausting, cute but exhausting.

My biggest .....people who believe that because I am there without children I should not be allowed to enjoy the park. Examples....putting your child on top of your shoulders directly in front of me or letting them stand on you so that my field of vision is also blocked. Another example happened last year when people actually told us that we should get out of line to see Mickey because we did not have children with us.

Now see, I would have said something rather unladylike in response to that.

I actually held my tongue this time......I was filming the whole incident. I actually was not the one in line it was my girl and her 25 year old sister who was in tears because she was so excited to see Mickey(she never had before!)

Knowing that now, I would have had bite marks on my tongue...

Right on Ricky!
I so agree. I don't have kids and I kinda like my
WDW kid fix I get on my trips.
Except for the mid afternoon melt downs! :scared1:
The kid's.:sad2: Not mine.
