During sport workouts, the kids do "suicides." This is where the kids run to a line bend and touch the line, then run back to another line, bend and touch the line, etc. etc.

They are no longer allowed to call them "suicides". Now they call them "Lines".

So, now we have Johnny running home going "Hey Mom! We did Lines today at practice!" :scared1:

Silly silly silly

what's next monkey rolls will be changed to something PC?

Lines in HS...ask Crocket and Tubbs

Yeah, but after the did Lines, it might make doing their suicides easier. lol.

Sorry I just couldn't resist. My way of dealing with stupidity is with humor.

They still call them suicides at DD cheerleading gym.

The word 'line' has many meanings, while the word 'suicide' has just two - the original, and the less literal slang.

If you want to interpret the word line to mean snorting a line of cocaine, fine, but that is only one of many interpretations. I think it is a much better choice that using the word 'suicide'. Of course, why not just call them drills?

I think "doing suicides" sounds better than "doing lines" if one were not to hear the rest of the sentence. I've never heard of "doing suicides" refer to anything other than those awful exercises from practice.... "doing lines" also has only ever had one meaning to me and it's not appropriate for an after school activity

25 years ago, when I was playing on basketball teams I heard them referred to by both names......

Gosh, I forgot all about "suicides". I hated them! I don't think lines is a good replacement, but maybe we are thinking too "old school". You don't hear much about anyone snorting lines anymore. :confused3 (insert Charlie Sheen joke here)

We called them killers when I was in high school but when I started coaching when I was in college a kid somewhere died after doing them and the admin had us change them to line drills-this was in the late 80's. They have been line drills around here that long.

Since I was in Jr. High (a long, long time ago) I've only know them as "lines". :confused3 I didn't even know there was another meaning. :confused3

My DS plays basketball and they are still referred to suicides here. DS hates them, but he is definetly in better shape since the beginning of the season and a faster runner because of them.

Way back 30 years ago, we called them Big 4's. Ugh. I remember my b-ball coach making a run more than one. Now I hear them referred to as suicides.

I don't recall doing them in school, but I know that they are known as "Lines" in my DD's school so I guess I don't get the whole drama :confused3.

My bff has a Saturn Ion and instead of calling it a "suicide door" they call it a "rear access door"-- bff said they're equally bad if you have that type of mindset anyway! :rotfl:

I don't think either name is great but how PC are we going to get?

When I was in school the only meanings I really knew for suicides were the drills we ran at Basketball practice and the soda concoction you got when you took your cup and got a little of each flavor then drank it. :rolleyes1

One of my cousins dad commit suicide this past year. While I often think so much PC is stupid, I don't about this. I probably would think it was dumb..except if it was my dad who commit suicide, I wouldn't want to hear the teacher tell us to do suicides. Maybe it's really a little dumb thing, but it could strike a nerve.

Sounds like "lines" or "shuttle runs" to me.:confused3 I think "suicide" is kind of a nasty name. I can see why the kids might call it that, but to have the adults calling it that seems odd to me.:confused3

They are touching the lines on the floor, it's pretty clear it's not a drug reference. However, IMO calling it suicide makes it pretty clear it IS a death reference.

Oh wow, that takes me right back to childhood. The old movie theater had a self dispensing soda machine (like at Burger King) and that was what we would always get, "suicides". I had forgotten all about them!

As someone who has been affected by suicidal situations, I have no problem with the basketball term, the car door term, or the drink term. But that's just my opinion. I haven't actually lost anyone to a suicide.

I *think* we called them nickle-dimes as well. Or was that something else?
