New Orleans

Here are some places to eat:

Gumbo Shop (best food and Hurricanes made from scratch not a mix)
Commanders Palace (really expensive but go just for the bread pudding)
Red Fish Grill (they have a 2 for menu but you have to ask for it)
Cafe DeMont (sp?) coffee and desert/breakfast.

The garden district is beautiful.

I'll second the warning about objectionable happenings in front of kids. We went there at the very beginning of Mardi Gras the year of Katrina, so it was a while back. My DH had a conference, and we brought our then 5 year old daughter, other children were there as well. Although we loved it and will go back again, I do want to caution you that while walking around the French Quarter we saw our share of things I would rather my daughter not have seen. This may or may not be true for young teenagers, as well. The partying was pretty extreme--we saw people with vomit all over their clothes being dragged away by friends who were nearly as drunk...but that aside, some of the shops had a lot of questionable items in the windows (think unmentionable body parts of both men and women) on necklaces, as stuffed toys, very risque and obscene sayings on shirts and aprons. Some guy offered me beads to lift my shirt while I was walking to dinner one night. I was holding my daughter's hand at the time and when I lifted it up to show I had a child with me he apologized. We all kind of laughed, but I remember it as a really anything goes kind of place. I think that New Orleans should have the "Whatever happens in New Orleans, stays in New Orleans ..." slogan more than Vegas (where we brought my then 6 year old DD the following year)!

Don't get me wrong, we did a lot of the family stuff mentioned by PPs, and we had a great time, but I just wanted to mention the other stuff so you aren't surprised.

We tried to avoid the Quarter as much as possible when our kids were younger. We did have to cross Bourbon once when returning from a restaurant to our hotel on Royal St. and a group of drunken guys followed us while propositioning our then 13 year old daughter. Hubby and his brother had to threaten violence to get them to move on.

Just a warning! People come down here and behave in a way they NEVER would dream of doing at home.

Snowball=snowcone in New Orleans. I was in college before I knew there was a snowball snack cake ;)

Come on, for real? Pink or white with chocolate cake, yummy. You can't be in your 40's, youngster :rotfl:

50 this year. We were Hubig's Pies folk. Every now and then my mom would throw a moon pie at us.

Never heard of these. I was born in TX, grow up in Los Angeles. Only LIKE Hostess, but tried of Little Debbie's & DollyMadison.

Yep, who knew there was a baked good with that name? I'm personally not big on Hubig's, but they were a top seller at school events in the concession stand. I can remember burning my hands slinging Hubig's Sweet Potato Pies at basketball games; we used to warm them in a toaster oven. http://www.hubigs.com/

My personal fave for snowballs is Hansen's, though.

One other word about terminology: there are no "trolleys" in New Orleans. That is a streetcar, and always has been.

"1825 Tu-Lane" ;)

so sorry didnot know how to reply since you did not take PM; if still available, one option considering is 2/(19) 20-24, so depending on where to stay range of points needed is 67-98. This is our first time, and thinking magic kingdom and animal kingdom will be hits. aobrien
