The Magnolia Bend buildings resemble mansions along the river. These rooms have two queen beds, a few have a king bed. The Aligator Bayou buildings are more rustic and surrounded by thick vegetation along meandering walkways. Most of these rooms have two queen beds and a fold down short Murphy bed. There are some King bed rooms, and a few handicapped rooms do not have a Murphy bed. All preferred rooms are located in the Aligator Bayou. They are preferred because they are closest to the food court and pool. Building 35 in AB is not a preferred room building. It is a bit distant from the food court and pool, and would likely be a bit less than a ten minute walk to the lobby.

Magnolia also has the princess themed rooms. The buildings in AB do not.

Checkout www.portorleans.org . It has info on which buildings are in which category (preferred, Royal & the rest) It also has room category info for each building at POR ( also POFQ but the buildings there have no special categories ).

We just recently stayed in the Alligator bayou preferred section, and the walk to the lobby was very close.

I'm booked in a preferred room for September. Did you feel like they were still quiet bring that close to the food and pool?

They actually weren't that close to the pool - that was across the little mill bridge. It was not a far walk - but not right on top of it either. And yes it was quiet, even though it was closer to the food court. My only negative to those rooms is that the theme being rustic, was very dark, and with the eco friendly lighting, the rooms were very dark. As opposed to the rooms in the Magnolia section, which while farther away, were light and bright.

I prefer the mansions for the same reasons.

We stayed at AB 36, and it was perhaps a 10 minute stroll to the front desk / gift shop /restaurants. The only time the walk proved awkward was when we wanted to bring food/drinks back to our room. But I think AB 36/37 is about the farthest away you CAN get from the front entrance. But the good news is there is a pool about 100 feet away (but no towels), and the bus depots are also pretty close. We found the rooms to be very quiet during our 10 day trip. The place was packed, but I don't think we ever once had any noise / sound issues....

We've stayed in both Magnolia and Alligator sections and prefer Alligator B.end The rooms themselves are very similar. 'Mansion' implies that the rooms or buildings might be nicer or more elegant but they're not; at least not the standard rooms. The biggest differences are the landscaping and distances. The mansion buildings are closer than some of the AB buildings but we never minded the walk and there are multiple pools and bus stops. The landscaping in the mansion area is more open while the AB area is lush and tropical.

We just came back from a stay at POR in the Alligator Bayou section. It was nice being pretty close main building, it was a little dark walking around, not too bad. But I found it really uncomfortable to just sit in the room..the chairs were spindly and the headboard had widely spaced spindles so lots of pillows to get comfortable in both. I don't remember thinking that when we stayed in the Mansion section 2 years ago.

With a family of 5, we stayed in alligator bayou for five straight years. The walk to the main building is nice, and often, by cutting through ol' man island, not very long. My kids never had a problem with the walk - my youngest was 4 when we first stayed there and we didn't use a stroller.

The pool is awesome for kids as well!

Hope this helps :)

Good way to think of it as you say New Orleans.
Port Orleans French Quarter is just that, the French Quarter area of NOLA.
Port Orleans Riverside Mansions is like the mansions along St. Charles Avenue as you leave downtown NOLA.
Port Orleans Riverside Alligator Bayou is way out from NOLA into the parishes and Cajun Country.

POR/FQ is probably the highest themed resort in terms of a story. When it first opened you would get a big newspaper that told you all about the backstory etc. That's what is great about portorleans.org - they fill in many of the gaps folks don't know about.

Magnolia also has the princess themed rooms. The buildings in AB do not.

But FYI for OP, not all the mansion buildings are "Princess". On the map below from portorleans.org the red buildings are Royal Rooms.

We do not like Building 14 due to the noise. It is right by the food court, right next to where the pizza delivery vehicle comes and all other delivery trucks come in to. Loved building 27 and 18 and actually one of our favorites was 16 pool view (standard so not guaranteed but really as nice or nicer than half the actual preferred).

I was in 16, right by the pool, my last trip. Even through Christmas, it was still very quiet right there in the corner. One night, I had some troubles sleeping, so I decided to go into the quiet pool. When I got there, there was like 3 other people, but they had left about 45 minutes after. So for a good hour, it was just me and a pool, at Disney World.

We had a "view" room but we actually couldn't see it for the landscape. It's just lush and natural feeling. You are right, we found the pool to be underused and quite relaxing.
