a circus abusing an animal is a completely different thing than her carefully holding the animals' tail. that animal has enough muscle control in its tail alone that if it didn't want her holding it, it wouldn't let her.

i suppose by your standards, its wrong to have pets at all? since domesticating big cats is wrong, what about domesticating small cats? they didn't evolve that way by chance, they were domesticated over thousands of years and house cats don't have all the instincts of feral cats.

i get that you're the big bad animal rights activist, and you're gonna quote the sunday times at me/her, but seriously, if you wanna make changes why don't you do something more effective than freak out over the internet for a girl holding a lion's tail?

hannah, i'm sorry for this disagreement being the welcome you receive here. your photos are beautiful.

AMEN!

I plan to make a difference. That's pretty much what I plan to do with my life.

I live near one of the largest big cat sanctuaries in the United States (Big Cat Rescue). I've been on tours there, and I know quite a bit about the exotic pet trade and how cruel it usually is. Her holding the lion by her tail was the least of my worries. And I don't know if you read her post, but Ruby is not her pet. She went to somewhere in South Africa to walk the lion.

Did you even read my whole post? Walkable lions are taken away from their mothers at very young ages, and often have their teeth and claws removed, along with being drugged before they meet tourists. Then, when the lions are too old and big to be considered cute, they are given to a game hunting places where the lions are shot and killed for trophies. It's a horrible cycle.

And before I posted that a lot of people probably thought having a pet lion or getting to walk a lion was 'cool'. I think that if just a few people read what I posted then I raised a little awareness right there. Not to mention, I donate to Big Cat Rescue and I plan to volunteer there when I'm old enough. I've also done a project on White Tiger Awareness, and that made about 25 people (my class) aware of the cruel truth behind the white tiger industry (in short, white tigers are NOT a real species of tiger, could never survuve in the wild, and every single one of them is inbred, causing deformaties and health issues).

And about the domestic cat thing.. Yes, I own four lovely domestic cats. They are allowed to roam outside and if they wanted to they could run off into the night and become wild hunter cats if they wanted to, but they don't. I'm not actively domesticating them. They've already been domesticated, and it's not like I'm running off into the wilds of Africa and getting myself some baby servals or lions or caracals or something and taking them home with plans to domesticate them. That would be wrong.

I would like to say that the place that I went to, they would never, ever remove there teeth or claws or drug them. The lions we walked with where going to be sent to shooting places or whatever but the family who own Colin's horse back safari saved them. I know that they did not cut off there teeth or claws and yeah i actually have a scratch to prove it. I dont understand how they could have been drugged because the too lions were fighting with each other, swimming, chasing cars, climbing trees and trying to attack the baboon that was up in the mountains.

cheezdoddle - no offence but why are you lecturing us all on animal rights!? thataustraliankid explained to us how lions like to be walked by their tail, i didn't know that before but then again i'm not very knowledgable about that sorta thing. thataustraliankid wouldn't have a lion if she didn't know what she was doing! i appreciate you are keen animals but there is really no need to give us a sermon!

All i did was "show my face" by posting some holiday photos. We can drop animal rights now and return to what this thread is supposed to be about.

She said it's not even her pet lion, she just walked it at a lion walking attraction. And lions don't 'liked' being walked by their tails, people like doing it. It makes money for the people who own lion walking attractions. And I feel that it's my duty to spread the word about big cats. I'm sorry if you find it offensive, and obviously you aren't even reading the posts, just picking sides. And for the record, if she did truly have a pet lion, that would mean she knew even less about lions, because people who truly care about big cats don't keep them as pets! I think it's sad that all you people are taking away from this conversation is that 'Oh it's so cute to walk a lion I want a pet lion too'.

And I realize that this isn't the thread to be talking about this on, so I'll gladly discuss this through PMs.

Sorry, but who are you to say all that?
I'm sorry but your post peeves me. Maybe the lions were bred to be at the 'attraction' and until it shows it's unhappy, I'm going to think otherwise.

That's the problem. People don't want to believe anything that might be sad. That's why zoos still breed white tigers, and that's why these lion walking attractions are allowed to take baby lions away from their mommies, only to be sold to game reserves when they're no longer small and pettable (no matter what they say), because people think it's 'cute' and 'just fine'.

And circus animals are made to jump through hoops of fire and live in cramped unnatural spaces, they don't 'show' that they're unhappy, but it doesn't make it right!

I tried to get this thread back on topic and talk about it through PMs, but if people are going to continue to bask in their ignorance, I'll continue to state the facts, no matter how sad or upsetting they might be. I know it's hard to believe that people would be cruel to animals for their own profit or entertainment, but sadly it does happen all too often. And the best way to stop these things from happening is to raise awareness.

If you're interested in big cat welfare go to www.bigcatrescue.org

i'm not arguing with you anymore, but please, if you intend to "state the facts" and save us all from ignorance, make your own thread. this thread has a purpose and you're tying that up.

thanks.

I agree that's why I tried to get it back on topic before. :thumbsup2
