I was watching that annoying advert. last night with the Switch and Maestro penguins and it made me think why are they calling the new murged debit card Maestro?

I don't know about anyone else but 'Switch' seems to be the universal name for debit a card (a bit like all vacuum cleaners being called hoovers!).
So why call the new murged debit card Maestro when everyone will continue to call it Switch?

It's a bit like a few years back when everyone used to call all their Mastercards 'Access' isn't it? The Maestro name is the name of the actual symbol I think, the Switch was only a brand name for the card and I guess they want to move away from that like Access did - don't ask me why though

hiya

the changing from switch is a hassle lol trust me i work at a bank and deal with complaints because its changing, every day

one of the main reasons switch is changing is because its outdated and the cards have become easy to clone and useless over seas.

The meastro is usable worldwide, but still not every where and still not available to use in stores outside the uk.

another problem is some cards just have maestro on but other debit card are becoming visa debit cards which is confusing people as they are using them like there actual visa cards.

chip and pins a good idea if the pins work with the cards, mine doesnt i have had three new cards and three pins and none work together lol.

its gonna be worse when u can only have two replacment cards a year cos i lose mine every other month

sorry i think i started ranting lol, its my day off, once in banking always in bank you know you have had a hard week when you answer the phone with hello your through to *** branch lol and then realise your at home

Yes, its just being given the international brand name. The name globally is Maestro. Switch is only in the UK. If you use an ATM machine abroad you will see that it will advertise that it accepts Mastercard and Maestro - you will not see a sign that it accepts Switch.

Switch joins the list of names such as Marathon (Snickers), Jif (Cif), Opal Fruits (Starburst) etc. which have gone in favour of globalisation. Can anyone name any others?
