I just read the article here about the new mugs. I'm confused....what exactly is the point of this? I understand they have bands now that you wear, which I don't know if I like that change, but what's with the new mugs? Anyone?

Lots of info over on the resorts forum. Basically, it's an RFID chip in a mug. Only mugs with the chip will trigger the soda dispenser, and there is a limit on how often it will trigger.

Ahh so it boils down to money....should've known, lol. According to the article, it's just soda right? So hot chocolate will still be unlimited? I discovered their hot chocolate on our last trip...amazing!

If you buy the mug hot chocolate is unlimited. Also soda is unlimited but you have to wait like three minutes between fill ups. It's to stop people from fill large containers with soda or reusing old mugs.

Ohhhh ok! Thanks! We actually brought our mugs from last year for our trip this year. Saved us money and space in our cupboards. So I guess I don't like this new system then either, lol.

Yes, stealing usually saves money. :rotfl2:

My guess is you will find it harder to steal in the future.

I didn't really consider it stealing until now, lol. Hmmm oh well. Just sucks is all, especially for those going every year and for those going frequently throughout the year.

I guess you didn't see the fine print on the side of your old mug? It states very clearly that the mug is for use for the length of stay of the trip the mug was purchased.

Not to worry anymore though, as the old mugs won't work on the new RFID machines.

The mugs are expensive and might not be worth the money to some people. But I got one a few years back and still use it. (it has mt coffee in it right now!) if anything it is good while you are there and also a fun souviner.

The new mugs a chip that allows you to purchase for the day, several days or length of trip (14 days I think). The drink dispensers all have a reader and will only dispense soda if it has an active chip. There is also a delay between fillings. Maybe a minute or two. We had to wait as DD got one drink by mistake and tried to get another and had to wait a minute or so to get it to dispense again. The machine tells you how long you need to wait.

The main reason is to prevent those guests still using the 1998 cup they bring back every year. It puts controls onto the dispensers to prevent theft, track what each guest is getting and save $$.

If you buy the cup, all drinks are unlimited.

Hot chocolate, water, iced tea and coffee are still in the old serving dispensers and are not controlled by the chips. At least that was the case at POR a few weeks ago. Only the soda machines had the new technology.

We just got back from POP and used the new mug. I got one for me and my DD to share since she mostly drank chocolate milk or juice. I only did two days since that's how long we were there for.

If you buy a paper cup you are allowed like 4 refills with in an hr and then it shuts off.

LOL....I just got up and looked, yes it does say that! Never noticed that. Anyway...we just have so many of those mugs! Instead of having to buy some every year, with this new system they should allow you to bring them back year after year and reactivate them. I think that's a better idea instead of having to buy them....but of course they want more money, so why do that, right.

It may be stealing but considering Disney doesn't actually pay for the soda used (at the fountain dispensers) it's a bit of over kill to charge $17/mug for a length of stay and then also put RFID chips in the paper cups.

Free refills at the resorts wouldn't hurt them.

People keep saying that Disney doesn't pay for the soda, but I can't find evidence of that anywhere, just a lot of urban legend stuff.

This and I also don't understand why people are so against a corporation making money. How do you think they pay for room refurbishments, new rides and attractions, more cm etc. if they are ok losing money in one area they are for sure making it up in another hence why free dining really isn't free for example.

Whether Disney pays for the syrup for soda or not it belongs to them and taking it without paying is stealing. And in the ops example taking the hot chocolate is stealing. Would I rather bring my mug back each visit and pay to have the chip reactivates sure, but that's not the way the system is set up. Hopefully some day I can do that but until then the mugs get shoved to the back of the cabinet until I have a yard sale.

We used the rfid mugs this trip and I didn't mind them. It was our first time on property so we never knew any different. We stayed a week and got the lenghth of stay. I guess my complaint is that we almost drank more soda on purpose to feel like we were "getting our money's worth." (Like dessert on the dining plans.) We filled up in the morning on the way to the park and when we came back.

We also viewed the mugs as a souvenir for me and dh. But, I know people on these boards say they have tons of old mugs in their cupboards...
