my DH and i went for our first WDW visit from September 16-26th.
We did the DVC tour of BLT and ended up purchasing minimum points (its just the two of us!)
very excited, had a wonderful trip, and really want to go to Aulani eventually, and cruises too.
Now that I've bought it, and im home, and im relooking at all the stacks of paperwork ive signed ive felt a little nervous-
browsing through the DVC forums ive read that its NOT a good deal to use for cruises. yikes. Its not a HUGE amount of money to us- I mean, we bought minimum points and my car cost more- so im not worried about being able to afford it- but
i just need you guys to tell me that ITS GOING TO BE AWESOME. and should i use it for cruises? does anyone really use it for nonDISNEY hotels?
i loved disney, but my DH less so and he really wants to use it every other year for non disney hotels and bank a year and go on the Alaskan cruise.

Welcome Home! We only use our points at WDW, but I've read posts by other who've used it for DCL and RCI etc.

Hi there! We have used our points for definitely staying in "the World," but have stayed at The Whitehall in downtown Chicago, and a couple others...but don't remember. We use our points to cruise once or twice every year. We did get more than the minimum number of points over the years.

But over the years, we have LOVED having our points!!! LOVED!!! Congrats!

I've really changed my thinking about only using our points for DVC stays only. Before I thought use your points only for a DVC stay. Right now we don't have any spare points for using them for anything other than DVC stays, but in the future maybe we'll want to take a cruise or stay at an RCI resort. And why not, they are our points to do whatever we want with them.

But we did purchase our points to stay at WDW. If we really only wanted to travel to WDW occasionally a DVC timeshare is not something we would have purchased. Another timeshare might fit our needs better and probably cost less to boot if traveling around the country (or other places around the world) was our aim.

BTW, if you don't change your mind, welcome home, BLT neighbor!

Welcome Home and Congratulations from Mickey, Goofy, and Me! I say use your points any way you want even if the best use is for DVC stays. Some people rent their points and use the cash for things like cruises, which usually covers the cost and puts some spending money in your pocket.

Congratulations and Welcome Home! We have used some points (always a combination of points and cash - family of 5) for our 4 DCL cruises (two cabins each time).

Also in the 11 years we own, exchanged once (II). We would definitely consider trying RCI too someday - have read some positive trip reports too.

Now that you bought, you will find yourselves visiting the world more often.

we were thinking about using points for Chicago too! we live up by Green Bay and usually have a blast in Chicago. I will definatly check that out! glad you LOVE it. once i get my first stay in a deluxe resort at WDW im going to be hooked.

i didnt change my mind! we closed and i am an official member. i think i just had bad luck coming to the DVC portion of the DIS boards and i happened upon 3 negative things in a row. haha. after some digging though im pretty excited! thanks a ton for responding though!

oh i never thought of that. i think if we do DVC almost every other year it will work out. already decided on the next trip too! DH and i decided last night we will be going 12/3/12 and get a MK view.

i told my husband that if he didnt want to go to WDW often there was plenty of people i knew who did and i could go on mini 3 or 4 day vacas to get away from work and bring those people! i really really want to do the alaskan cruise. i think 2013 is when we are going to do that!! thank you!!!
