We got a new kitten yesterday, 9 weeks old, but not littler trained.

He seems to be eating o.k. and drinking, but has not pooped or peed yet.

He has an appointment for shots and a check-up tomorrow AM, but I wonder how long it will be before he does some business. I am keeping him confined to the bathroom until he has his shots, and I am hoping he will also use the litter box before I let him have more reign in the house.

Any ideas?

I haven't had a cat in years so I'm no help but do you have any pictures?:)

Both my girls were older when I adopted them (5 month and 9 month). It took them almost 2 days before they started using the litter. I guess it is pretty common for them to hold it until they get used to their new surroundings. We basically took them to the litter box once an hour (at least so they knew where it was). If we left, we confined them in the room with the box until we got home. After we noticed them using it, we stopped confining and taking them too it and they have had no issues since!

My only suggestion would be to keep the kitten in a room with the box at all time since it is not litter trained yet and to set a timer to take him to the box.

His name is Ziggy. We are in love.

OMG, you *MUST* give me that kitten right this instant!!!

He is prob just getting used to his new home. As long as he doesn't cry when you touch his tummy, he should be okay until you get to a vet.

ETA: The not peeing concerns me a bit. But with a vet appt tomorrow morning, I'm sure he'll be fine.

I LOVE THAT KITTY!!!! He and my Sweet Pea (in my sig) would get along great, I want him!!

I am not sure how old Sweet Pea was when we adopted her, but the Save A Life foundation said around 2 months. I put her in the litter box as soon as we got home, and she went immediately. I had forgotten how neat and tidy and self reliant cats are, and I just laughed and pointed at her and said, "YOU ARE SO COOL!!"

In about a week she developed a UTI and she was tinkling on the floor. We took her to the vet and he gave her Amoxicillan and she hasn't gone anywhere but her litter box since. We even started her in one of the automatic boxes that you aren't supposed to use until they are older. I didn't know, and she does just fine in it.

GIMME THAT KITTY!!

When we got kittens I always place them in the litter and then take one of their paws and start digging with it.
Usually never fails.

I do it frequently until I see them peeing and pooing on their own.

I am sure he will be fine. He just needs more time to get adjusted. He is probably getting sick of me putting him in the litter box, but he stays in there a little longer each time. I will talk to the vet in the morning. He definitely does not seem to be in any pain. He is the cutest thing ever, isn't he? He is great with my kids, too.

My adult male cat is not at all sure he likes this new little creature. I went home at lunch today and he was hiding in the drawer under DD's bed.

Hopefully they will grow into good buddies.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts.

Have you plopped him in the litter box. He may not know where to go.
Or he may be leaving you little presents.

It is unlike a kitten with a small digestive tract to not have eliminated already. He may just be holding it until he is sure.

Yeah I have put him into the litter box a lot, I have scratched around with my hands and have scratched with his paws, too. Hopefully when I get home he will have gone.

He is SO cute!

I don't think you have anything to worry about, but it's good that he has an appt tomorrow just so you can ask.

Congrats!! I love how Dis buddies unite when it comes to the topic of cats!

As a "mom" to 3 cats, I think you are doing exactly the right thing by putting him in the litter box all the time so he gets used to it. He is probably just shy and a bit scared being in new surroundings.

You are doing just right, just keep putting him in the box and he will get it. You might have a few accidents the first few days but putting him in the bathroom with his litter box is a great idea. :) He's absolutely precious!!!!! Congrats on your new baby. :)

Just keep putting him in it. That said, I'd be surprised that he's not litter trained at 9 weeks as they tend to learn from their mother...? We got ours at 8 weeks (separate litters, 6 months apart) and never even had to show them where the litter tray was...?

He's adorable!

You need to keep him somewhere warm and quiet for 5-7 days to let him adjust. The bathroom is ideal especially if he's not litter trained. I kept my older cat in my bedroom which was a mistake because now as a 12lb cat he thinks it's still perfectly normal to try to sleep in the bed WITH me :headache: :rotfl: :cloud9:

(He gets kicked out of the bedroom at night now and sleeps downstairs with the other cat - in a cardboard box )
